TheDuchy of Courland and Semigallia was aduchy in theBaltic region. It existed from 1562 through 1795. It was avassal state ofGrand Duchy of Lithuania and later ofPoland-Lithuania. It became independent in 1791, but was annexed byRussian Empire in 1795 duringThird Partition of Poland. It was ruled by thedukes from theHouse of Kettlerwith the exception ofErnst Johann Biron and his sonPeter von Biron.

It had its ownempire. One of its colonies was modern dayTrinidad and Tobago.
