TheDordogne (Occitan:Dordonha) is a river in south-central and southwestFrance. The Dordogne river and itsdrainage basin was named as aBiosphere Reserve by theUNESCO on 11 July 2012.[1]

The Dordogne has a length of483 km (300.1 mi), and adrainage basin with an area of approximately23,957 km2 (9,250 sq mi).[2]

Its average yearlydischarge (volume ofwater which passes through a section of the river perunit oftime) is 274cubic metres persecond atBergerac.[3]

The Dordogne starts on the sides of thePuy de Sancy,Massif Central, in thecommune ofMont-Dore,Puy-de-Dôme department, at anelevation of about1,380 m (4,528 ft).[4]

It flows generally west through theNouvelle-Aquitaine region and theDordogne department before flowing into theGironde where it joins, in the north of the city of Bordeaux, theGaronne river to form theGironde estuary, at about1 m (3 ft) of altitude.[5]
