Doge (pluraldogi ordoges) is a word of anItalian dialect that comes from theLatindux (as does the Englishduke and the standard Italianduce), that means "leader", especially in a military context.

The title ofdoge was used for the electedhead of state in a number ofItalian "crowned republics". The two best known suchrepublics wereVenice andGenoa, which had maritime, commercial, and territorial mini-empires. Sometimes the Doge ruled for life; sometimes for a fixed number of years.
