Denis Diderot (French: [dəni didʁo]; 5 October 1713 – 31 July 1784) was aFrench philosopher,art critic and writer. He was a known figure during theEnlightenment. He is best known for serving as co-founder, chief editor and contributor to theEncyclopédie along withJean le Rond d'Alembert.[1] Born into a noble, Catholic family, in later years he rebelled, becoming anAtheist.

Diderot died from pulmonary thrombosis in Paris, aged 70.
