TheDaughters of Bilitis/bɪˈliːtɪs/, also called theDOB or theDaughters, was the first[1]lesbiancivil and political rights organization in theUnited States.
The organization, formed inSan Francisco in 1955 byDel Martin and Phyllis Lyon, was created to be another hangout area for lesbians other thanlesbian bars. This was to avoidraids andpolice harassment. It later gave support to women who were afraid tocome out.
The DOB educated them about their rights, and aboutgay history.
