Acommune is the lowestadministrative division inFrance. It represents all parts of atown or avillage under the same name, for exampleParis,Bordeaux orRennes. This is much more than in any otherEuropean country. Every commune in Franceelects amayor. The French wordcommune was first used in the 12th century[source?], fromMedieval Latincommunia, meaning a small gathering of people sharing a common life, fromLatincommunis, things held in common.[source?]
