William Clark Gable (February 1, 1901 – November 16, 1960) was an American actor. He was best known for playingRhett Butler in the 1939 movie version ofGone with the Wind.

Life

Gable was born on February 1, 1901 in Cadiz,Ohio.[1] He was married five times. He had two children. The last movie that Gable starred in wasThe Misfits, in 1961. This movie also starredMarilyn Monroe and was written byArthur Miller. Gable died shortly afterwards inLos Angeles,California, after having had a fourthcoronary thrombosis.

Gable was nominated for anAcademy Award for playingFletcher Christian in the 1935 movie version ofMutiny on the Bounty. A year before in 1934, he starred inIt Happened One Night withClaudette Colbert. Their performances won them both an Academy Award (the only wins in their careers).
