Cisco Systems, Inc. is an Americanmultinational technologyconglomerate headquartered inSan Jose, California, in the center ofSilicon Valley.[3] Cisco develops, manufactures and sellsnetworking hardware,telecommunications equipment and otherhigh-technology services and products.[4] Through its numerous acquired subsidiaries, such asOpenDNS,WebEx, Jabber andJasper, Cisco specializes into specific tech markets, such asInternet of Things (IoT),domain security andenergy management.[5]

Cisco stock was added to theDow Jones Industrial Average on June 8, 2009, and is also included in theS&P 500 Index, theRussell 1000 Index,NASDAQ-100 Index and the Russell 1000 Growth Stock Index.[6]

Cisco Systems was founded in December 1984 byLeonard Bosack andSandy Lerner, twoStanford University computer scientists.[7] They pioneered the concept of alocal area network (LAN) being used to connect geographically disparate computers over a multiprotocolrouter system. By the time the company went public in 1990, Cisco had a market capitalization of $224 million.[8] By the end of thedot-com bubble in the year 2000, Cisco had a more than $500 billion market capitalization.[9]
