Bregenz (Vorarlbergian:Breagaz) is thecapital ofVorarlberg, the westernmost federal state ofAustria. About 27.000 people live in the city proper, itsagglomeration has about 60.000 people. Together withLindau, the settled area (which reaches into the south ofGermany, and intoSwitzerland) has about 120.000 people. The city has aport onLake Constance and is a railway hub.
Humans have lived in the area since about 1500 BC. During Roman times, there was anOppidum. Parts of the city are fortified. Bregenz has the right to hold a market once a week since 1330.
The borders of Switzerland and Germany are less than 10 km away.
The main ethnic groups are Austrians, Turkish, Italians, Serbians, and Germans.
