Bologna (Emilian and Romagnol:Bulåggna) is the capital and largest city ofEmilia-Romagna inNorthern Italy. It has about 400,000inhabitants.

History

Bologna was founded by theEtruscans with the nameFelsina (c. 534 BC) and became aRoman colony in 189 BC.

In the11th century Bologna began to grow again as a free commune, joining theLombard League againstFrederick Barbarossa in 1164.

TheUniversity of Bologna, founded in 1088, is the oldest existinguniversity inEurope.

After being crushed in the Battle of Zappolino by the Modenese in 1325, Bologna began to decay and asked the protection of thePope at the beginning of the14th century.

In1980,85 people were killed in abombing atBologna Centrale railway station. This was the most deadlyterrorist attack in the history of Italy.
