The wordberry is used for many different kinds of smallfruits that have manyseeds and can be used as food. Some examples areraspberry,strawberry, sutberry,lingonberry andblueberry.
Whenbotanists talk aboutberries, they mean a simplefruit produced from a singleovary. They sometimes call thistrue berry, to distinguish it fromfalse berries. By that statement of how words are used,grapes ortomatoes are true berries.
The berry is the most common type of soft fruit in which the entire ovary wall gets to the right stage of development of thepericarp which can be taken as food. The flowers of these plants have an upper ovary with one or morecarpels. The seeds are inside the soft body of the ovary.
Berries are small, sweet, bright colored fruits. Due to this, they are able to bring moreanimals towards them and spread theirseeds.
Some fruits that are calledberries inEnglish are nottrue berries by the use of words above. These includeraspberries, strawberry, sutberry,blackberries,cranberries, andboysenberries. Some true berries do not haveberry in their name.
