Benjamin was the youngestson ofJacob and the second son ofRachel. When Rachel gavebirth toJoseph sheprayed that the Lord would one day give her anotherchild. And when Jacob and hisfamily leftAramea, Rachel stole theidols of herfatherLaban without telling Jacob so when Laban came to Jacob and asked him “why did yousteal mygods” Jacob said that he didn’t do it andcurses theperson who did it todie. Later, Rachel becamepregnant and gavebirth to a son and since she wasdying inchildbirth shenamed him Ben-Oni, son of my suffering, and after Rachel died, Jacob named theboy Benjamin, the son of theright.
After thesale ofJoseph,Jacob thought Joseph wasdead so he decided always to keep Benjamin by his side to protect him so that nothing could happen to him. ButJudah (Biblical personage) still convinced him to let him bring Benjamin toEgypt with apromise to keep him safe. Then Benjamin was framed forstealing acup from Joseph and Joseph said that he wouldenslave Benjamin aspunishment but Judah and his brothers asked Joseph to havemercy on Benjamin and take them instead. Then Joseph told them he was their long lost brother and forgave them.
Benjamin became theancestor of anIsraelitetribe called the Benjaminites.
According to aMidrash in theTalmud, Benjamin was one of only four people who neversinned in their entirelife.
