The wordBenedictine usually refers to a follower of theOrder of Saint Benedict. These people usually lead a life in anabbey. They follow the rule ofBenedict of Nursia. Benedict lived in the6th century. He made some rules, called theRule of St Benedict these people follow. The rules can be summed up bypax (peace) andora et labora (pray and work).

Most Benedictines see themselves as part of theCatholic Church. Some can also be found in theEastern Orthodox Church and theAnglican Church. Officially, the order is known asOrdo Sancti Benedicti (OSB).
