The department of Ardèche was created on 4 March 1790 with sevendistricts: Annonay, Aubenas, L'Argentière, Privas, Tournon, Vernoux and Villeneuve-de-Berg. Thecapital wasPrivas alternating with Annonay, Aubenas, Le Bourg(-Saint-Andéol) and Tournon. In August of that year, the number of districts was reduced to three: Mézenc, Aubenas and Tanargue. In September, Privas became the only capital of the department.[4]
In 1800, with the creation of thearrondissements in France, the three districts were changed into threearrondissements: Privas, L'Argentière and Tournon.[4]
On 18 March 1988, Tournon changed its name to Tournon-sur-Rhône.[4]

Ardèche had a population, in 2014, of 322,381,[3] for a population density of58.3 inhabitants/km2. Thearrondissement of Tournon-sur-Rhône, with 135,786 inhabitants, is thearrondissement with more inhabitants.[7]
