On 1 October 2024,Israel began aninvasion of southernLebanon as part of the ongoingIsrael–Hezbollah conflict, a result of theIsrael–Hamas war. It happened after a series of major attacks onHezbollah in September that weakened them.[1][2][3] This included theexplosions of its communication devices.[4][5] Israeli airstrikes also targeted Hezbollah's infrastructure across southern Lebanon.[6] These attacks also led in the 27 Septemberassassination ofHassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah.[7][8]
According to Israel, the invasion is to take out Hezbollah's forces and power that could be a threat to civilian communities in northern Israel.[9][10][11] Israel also said that theIran-supported group was preparing for an attack similar to the7 October Hamas-led attack on Israel.[9][12]
