Saturn is the sixthplanet from theSun in theSolar System. It is the second largest planet afterJupiter. Saturn was named after theRoman godSaturnus. Like Jupiter,Uranus andNeptune, it is a "gas giant". Saturn is best known for itsrings which were first seen byGalileo Galilei in 1610 with his telescope. These rings which are only 10m thick and 120,700km wide, are made of ice, rocks and dust. The interior of Saturn is probably acore ofiron, nickel, silicon andoxygen compounds, surrounded by a deep layer ofmetallic hydrogen, then a layer ofliquidhydrogen and liquidhelium and finally, an outergaseous layer. Saturn has 62 knownmoons, and the largest moonTitan, is larger than the planetMercury. Saturn is about 1,400,000,000 km from the Sun. In the time it takes Saturn to complete one orbit of the Sun, or one Saturn year, the Earth has orbited 29.6 times, or 29.6years onEarth. | Earth is the thirdplanet from theSun and the only place we know of wherelife exists. One big reason life can exist here is that Earth is an “ocean world.” This means it has a lot ofwater on its surface, and it is the only planet in ourSolar System with liquid water that life can use. Most of Earth’s water is in theoceans, which cover about 71% of the planet’s surface. The rest, about 29%, is land. Most of this land is grouped into largecontinents. Earthformed about 4.5 billion years ago from clouds ofgas anddust in the early Solar System. |
