USPulp magazine; five issues, December 1940 to July 1941, bimonthly after January 1941. Published by H-K Publications; edited by F OrlinTremaine. Tremaine, former editor ofAstounding, made a brief and undistinguished return to sf-magazine editing with this title. Tremaine wanted to recapture the wonder ofAstounding from the mid-thirties, but without the financial support ofStreet & Smith or the editorial support of DesmondHall, the end result fell short. Amongst the more interesting items were contributions by EandoBinder, LeighBrackett, Frank BelknapLong, P SchuylerMiller, RossRocklynne, Clifford DSimak, HarlVincent and JackWilliamson.Comet also published the first professional appearance by SamMoskowitz, "The Way Back" (January 1941). The last issue was perhaps the best and contained "The Vortex Blaster" (July 1941), the first story of E ESmith's series of that name. A continuing feature was "The Spacean", an imaginary future newspaper which betrayed the magazine's juvenile slant.Comet had little visual appeal; its cover layout was particularly ungainly.
