Florida Creationism Bill Creeps Forward
A couple of months ago we wroteFlorida — Another Creationism Bill for 2018. That was aboutHB 827, introduced byByron Donalds from Naples.
The bill would permit members of the public to recommend instructional materials for consideration by the state or their district school board, which would then be required to get in touch with the publisher of those materials and allow it to submit a bid for evaluation. We said that if this thing becomes law, it will add even more time and expense to the already clumsy procedure for selecting school texts. And of course, it will give every creationist drooler an opportunity to participate.
Our friends at the National Center for Science Education (NCSE) just postedInstructional materials bill advances in Florida. “Advances” — that doesn’t sound good. Here are some excerpts:
Florida’sSenate Bill 1644 — which would make it easier for creationists and climate change deniers to smuggle instructional materials they favor into public school classrooms — was approved by the Senate Education Committee on a 7-3 vote on February 12, 2018.
Egad! We checked the legislature’s page on the House bill we had already written about, and it shows that the Senate bill is a companion to the one we’ve already discussed. They say it’s in the Senate’s Education Committee and scheduled for 12 February, and — just as NCSE reports — it was approved by a vote of 7 to 3.
The Senate’s page to which NCSE linked says says the primary sponsor of the Senate bill isTom Lee. He has a degree in business from the University of Tampa, and he’s a “Licensed Real Estate Salesperson.”
There are three co-sponsors in the Senate — geniuses all.Dennis Baxley, a Funeral Director,Greg Steube, a lawyer, andDebbie Mayfield — occupation “Public Servant.” They’re all Republicans.
So that’s the news from Florida. As we said before:

Yes — but are theystable geniuses? We hear Trump may be looking for some staff to help out in the White House. Speaking of Trump, he’s a bag of oats short of the last “stable genius” we know of — Mr. Ed.
Some words appear to have been transposed in the title of this post. Surely it should read
