Upvoted. Simplicity works. Not knowing what happened with the paradoxes was a wise choice, I think. Avoids complicating it.
Perhaps so! But I'm not sure. I'd say that's not the polar opposite, it's just the lack of a thing. The opposite of a dog would be some sort of un-dog, and even then it's unclear whether than would be a logically opposite statement.
When I was writing this I realised there are lots of ways to get oneself into trouble and tied in knots when dealing with opposites, logic and language. So I decided that instead of trying to solve the problem head-on, I wanted the logs to hint at a certain amount of uncertainty over the fallibility and (by implication) sentience of the echo. I'm hoping it pays off :)
Exactly. The opposite of 1 is -1, not 0. Thus, the opposite of dog would be "negative dog", for which there is no real word.
That said, it's been a while since I saw a nice, simple, wholesomely safe entry that WORKED. Congrats. Also I like to imagine the paradoxical thing simply being "This statement is true", but that was too simple and the researchers spiced it up to make it sound better (compare the infamous "$10,000 toilet seat" in the Space Shuttle)
Simple. Logic humour. I like it— I just started guessing at potential horrors early on, and was a little let down by how MUCH was [EXPUNGED]. Still, less is generally better than too much … upvoted.
I like to think that the echo just said "Oh, fuck you" in test 3. Or maybe responded with "This statement is just as false"
That's exactly what I was thinking.
What if someone who doesn't speak french shouts random gibberish in french?
It replies with random gibberish in German.
"Bonjour!"
"Auf Wiedersehen!"
Hah! If it helps, it was hard to do the expunging. I really wanted to talk about it but I had a strong feeling it was better not to. Still, I might append supplementary logs at a later date if I think there's a good case for having some more echo demonstrations.
I'm thinking that is a good instinct to follow, too. It definitely worked here.
But I do like your idea of adding logs later— maybe in the vein of SCP-914 or SCP-294, with a mix of cracky and unsettling outcomes. I think keeping death and entrails out of it would be for the better, by far, but it might be creepy to have someone just… vanish. Or alterations of speech/perception, in the same logic-vein.
Even without any of that, a bit more lead up to the [NOPE DENIED] might make the hammer drop a bit heavier.
Straightforward, interesting, and kind of funny. You have my upvote, good sir.
In the later experiments, attempts were made to test SCP-1044 by calling out self-contradictory statements such as 'This sentence is false.' This invariably resulted in [DATA EXPUNGED]. Future experiments are to avoid such attempts.
ugh
upvote though
