Its admeenistrative centre is locatit atHailar Destrict, its lairgest urban aurie. Tradeetionally, Hulunbuir wis a pairt oManchurie, an the eastren pairt o the aurie wis kent as Barga. Frae 1912-1949, during theRepublic o Cheenae period (ROC), Hulunbuir wis pairt oXing'an anHeilongjiang province. Durin theJapanese occupation o Cheenae, Hulunbuir wis annexed intae the Japanesepuppet state oManchukuo, but the ROC did no recognise this development as legal. In theCheenese Ceevil War, theCommunist Pairty o Cheenae gained the support o Inner Mongol leaders likUlanhu bi promisin theirredentist expansion o Inner Mongolie intae auries that haed majorities oHan anManchu fowk.[1] Efter the1949 Communist revolution in Cheenae, Hulunbuir wis annexed intaeInner Mongolie, but the region kept economic tees tae the rest o Manchurie via theChinese Eastern Railway.[2]
