The outlook for many individuals with autism spectrum disorder today is brighter than it was 50 years ago; more people with the condition are able to speak, read, and live in the community rather than in institutions, and some will be largely free from symptoms of the disorder by adulthood… Show more

“…; a detailed comparison of the characteristics of included vs. the excluded population can be found in Table S1). When compared to controls, cases had male predominance, higher maternal and paternal ages (48.4% vs. 39.3% mothers over 30 and 33.9% vs. 28.5% fathers over 35, cases and controls, respectively), along with higher SES, as expected from the literature [American Psychological Association [APA], ; Lai et al,; Lord et al,]. Cases also had a higher percentage of siblings diagnosed with ASD and multiple gestations, as well as a lower percentage of the minority groups in Israeli society, IA, and UOJ (Table ).…”

“…The prevalence and incidence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have increased immensely in recent years [Baio et al,; Hertz‐Picciotto & Delwiche,; Jensen, Steinhausen, & Lauritsen,; Lai, Lombardo, & Baron‐Cohen,; Lord, Elsabbagh, Baird, & Veenstra‐Vanderweele,; Raz, Weisskopf, Davidovitch, Pinto, & Levine,]. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the estimates of ASD prevalence among children up to the age of 8 in the United States have increased from 1:150 to 1:59 between 2000 and 2014, this estimate is based on medical and educational evaluations that are reviewed by clinicians for each child.…”

“…The ability to access high‐quality services and navigate complex health systems understandably influences the likelihood of ASD evaluation and diagnosis [Parish, Magaña, Rose, Timberlake, & Swaine,; Zuckerman et al,; Zuckerman et al,]. Detection of ASD is also complicated by heterogeneity in symptom presentation [Lord et al,], presence of co‐occurring conditions [Close, Lee, Kaufmann, & Zimmerman,; Levy et al,], maturational changes [Fountain, Winter, & Bearman,; Gotham, Pickles, & Lord,; Lord, Luyster, Guthrie, & Pickles,], and evolving diagnostic criteria [Matson, Kozlowski, Hattier, Horovitz, & Sipes,; McPartland, Reichow, & Volkmar,]. Consequently, some children with ASD characteristics do not receive a clinical diagnosis of ASD or may be diagnosed later than other children with a similar behavioral profile [Baio et al,; Mandell, Ittenbauch, Levy, & Pinto‐Martin,; Magaña, et al, 2013].…”
