A Phylogenomic Solution to the Origin of Insects by Resolving Crustacean-Hexapod Relationships

Abstract:Insects, the most diverse group of organisms, are nested within crustaceans, arguably the most abundant group of marine animals. However, to date, no consensus has been reached as to which crustacean taxon is the closest relative of hexapods. A majority of studies have proposed that Branchiopoda (e.g., fairy shrimps) is the sister group of Hexapoda [1-7]. However, these investigations largely excluded two equally important taxa, Remipedia and Cephalocarida. Other studies suggested Remipedia [8-11] or Remipedia… Show more

“…Although these two groups share some similar structural characters, with unsegmented tarsi, simple claws and the absence of cerci (Hennig, ), they have many obvious differences in abdominal segmentation, the central nervous system, the pyloric region and Malpighian tubules, the structures and the germaria in the ovaries, and postembryonic development (Yin et al ., ). Most studies based on morphological and molecule data rejected the monophyly of Ellipura (Bitsch & Bitsch,,; Giribet et al .,; Luan et al .,; Chen et al .,; Sasaki et al .,; Dell'Ampio et al .,), but it was well supported in recent phylogenomic analyses (Misof et al .,; Schwentner et al .,,). However, poor taxon sampling has been an issue for most studies concerning Protura.…”

“…With comprehensive transcriptome data of pancrustaceans, Schwentner et al . (,) demonstrated Remipedia to be the sister group of Hexapoda. Yet taxon sampling, gene sampling and tree reconstruction methods remain limited for phylogenomic studies.…”

“…The branchiopod crustacean Daphnia magna is a newly emerging model of evo‐devo studies (Araujo,). Recent phylogenetic analyses (Schwentner, Combosch, Pakes Nelson, & Giribet,) suggested that Daphnia is most closely related to insects among the model animals. They usually produce parthenogenetic eggs throughout the year under laboratory conditions (22°C ± 1°C, 14 hr light/10 hr dark) allows their culture in the laboratory easily.…”

“…The branchiopod crustacean Daphnia magna is a newly emerging model of evo-devo studies(Araujo, 2017). Recent phylogenetic analyses(Schwentner, Combosch, Pakes Nelson, & Giribet, 2017) (ESTs) and whole genomes have been sequenced in D. magna(Orsini, Decaestecker, De Meester, Pfrender, & Colbourne, 2011;Watanabe et al, 2005), and the transcriptome has been analyzed(Watanabe et al, 2007). Several methods for gene manipulation, such as RNAi(Kato et al, 2011b), TALEN or CRISPR/Cas9 mediated knock-out Naitou, Kato, Nakanishi, Matsuura, & Watanabe, 2015) and knock-in(Nakanishi et al, , 2016 have been developed for D. magna, which enabled us to investigate the functions of genes responsible for various developmental processes, including eye development(Mahato et al, 2014;Nakanishi et al, 2014) and environmental sex determination(Kato, Kobayashi, Watanabe, & Iguchi, 2011a).…”
