Expression and Clinical Significance of the Autophagy Proteins BECLIN 1 and LC3 in Ovarian Cancer

Abstract:Autophagy is dysregulated in cancer and might be involved in ovarian carcinogenesis. BECLIN-1, a protein that interacts with either BCL-2 or PI3k class III, plays a critical role in the regulation of both autophagy and cell death. Induction of autophagy is associated with the presence of vacuoles characteristically labelled with the protein LC3. We have studied the biological and clinical significance of BECLIN 1 and LC3 in ovary tumours of different histological types. The positive expression of BECLIN 1 was … Show more

“…LC3 expression is increased from the early to mid-luteal stages in mice[37]. High levels of BECN1 and LC3 in ovarian carcinomas have been found to indicate a better prognosis[38]. In our research, we found a significant increase of P62 and decreases of Cathepsin B, BECN1, and ULK1 mRNA in the ovaries of insulin-treated mice on pregnancy D4.…”

“…Dysregulation of autophagy underlies cancer initiation and progression, and is involved in chemoresistance. Others and we have shown that autophagy is deregulated in ovarian cancer as a consequence of genetic and epigenetic alterations. Recently, we found that RV may elicit a microRNA‐mediated epigenetic regulation of autophagy in ovarian cancer cells.…”

“…21 Since BECN1 positivity is a hallmark of HBV-mediated autophagy,8 we examined BECN1 in clinical liver tissues as previously described.22,23 As shown in Fig. 6B, diffuse staining for BECN1 was observed in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes in healthy control tissues (regarded as negative), whereas large dark brown puncta were observed (regarded as positive) in those of CHB patients.…”
