The Changing Geoepidemiology of Food Allergies

Abstract:The science of food allergy has been rapidly evolving before our eyes in the past half century. Like other allergic disorders, the prevalence of food allergies has dramatically increased, and coupled with the increased public awareness of anaphylaxis due to food allergy, this has driven an explosion in basic and clinical research in this extremely broad subject. Treatment of food allergies has evolved and practices such as food challenges have become an integral part of an allergy practice. The impact of the i… Show more

“…Fish FPIES is common in southern Europe, whilst most US and UK studies report cow's milk as the most common trigger.5,7,8 Here, we sought to determine trends in Australian children with FPIES by characterizing the demographic profile, medical history and food trigger associations of a single tertiary centre cohort over a 20-year period. We sought to identify risk factors associated with food triggers, severity of reaction and resolution.…”

“…Allergens are a matter of public health, mainly because of the dramatically increasing incidence in the last 20 years.. Since there is no cure for allergy, the only way is to avoid anaphylaxis with a correct dietary education, with responsible information that involves all the food chain, from farm to fork.…”

“…Resuming these described advances, it has to be underlined that the proteomic analysis of food allergens has become a key issue in the food safety field in recent years. This represents a key point, especially in the light of the dramatically increasing prevalence of food allergies coupled with the increased public awareness of anaphylaxis due to food allergy. The limit of this technique is that it is restricted to the detection of linear epitopes.…”

“…Plants provide an almost unlimited experimental system and despite being far in evolution they share an important number of genes , with similar mechanisms of, for example, immunity , and host‐pathogen interactions . In addition, plants may be sources of drugs for disease treatment and also of allergens. Some more examples of common phenomena between plants and animals are totipotency, the property of the cells to be developmentally reprogrammed, the conceptual basis of the stem cell projects, and the involvement of telomeres and telomerases in senescence and aging .…”
