Okay, kids - I know you lovedthose robot photos from SFO's science fiction in popular culture exhibit. So before my flight out of SFO after New Year's, I snagged a few more snapshots! First up: Spaceman Air Freshener. Umm, that doesn't exactly instill confidence - I think the space station probably smells like a rusty latrine.

Ahhhhhh! Attack of the space Mrs. Butterworths!

Tom Corbett Space Academy. (It's just like a wild west fort - in space.)

"Mr. Hustler?"Really?

These are a few female space alien figurines. I'm not sure how powerful a blow they struck for feminism in Mr. Hustler's era, given that they all have skimpy outfits and/or babies. But at least they indicate that women were part of the big picture.

"Captain Video:" if it was not a show on Nickelodeon in the late 80s, it should have been. (What is this game supposed to be? Turntables for a space DJ?)

After spending all last weekend preparing our income tax return, I must have money on my mind. So this week's Casual Fridays study is about money. I don't want to tell you much more about it before you participate in the survey because it may affect the results, so just go ahead and click.
It's been a while since I've written a topology post. Rest assured - there's plenty more topology
Topology usually starts with the idea of a *metric space*. A metric space is a set of values with some concept of *distance*. We need to define that first, before we can get into anything really interesting.Metric Spaces and Distance------------------------------
In the mid-1970s, the U.S. State Department prohibited the internal use of the term "space colony," due to the global bad reputation of colonialism.

Hey, the air freshener isn't for the space station -- it's for use on other planets. The air on Jupiter is pretty noxious. "I declare this planet to be April Fresh!"

That terminal has had some great exhibits.

There have to be women in science fiction. Who else would the stalwart and manly hero save from the bug eyed monsters.

Hmmm... as a female, perhaps that's why I tended to root for the BEM's.

I just wanted to randomly interject that I found your OLD blog doing an image search for old etchings of carboniferous life forms.
As soon as I saw it I was in LOVE!
I've been reading back and over a ton of this stuff, and it's wonderful- I just love your blog- thanks

Thanks, Esmeralda! Glad you found us.

A few weeks ago, I was notified that if I wished to continue blogging at Scienceblogs/National Geographic, I'd have to agree to new terms. After considering these terms, as well as the decision to ban pseudonymous blogging, I don't feel that the new management and I are on the same page. I have…
A few months ago I got an email from Zachtronics, creators of the Codex of Alchemical Engineering, about the new indie game called SpaceChem. It was billed as "an obscenely addictive, design-based puzzle game about building machines and fighting monsters in the name of science." What's not to love…

Recently, Scienceblogs/National Geographic decided it would no longer host pseudonymous science bloggers. As a result, many of my former colleagues have left. I think this decision was wrong. Read on for my reasons. One: simple fairness. Several well-established pseudonymous bloggers had been…
This video from Xperia Studio very effectively conveys how data visualization can both leverage and challenge our conceptions of "reality." The night sky we've seen since childhood, like everything else we see, is just a tiny slice of the spectrum - only what we can perceive with our limited…
