Taking into consideration the problems, dangers and challenges they faced, the overall aim of thi... moreTaking into consideration the problems, dangers and challenges they faced, the overall aim of this paper is to advance a clear picture of the interpreting situation and the roles played by community interpreters in war zones namely in Iraq. It draws upon the results of questionnaires sent to more than 30 interpreters who worked for the coalition forces during the 2003 war in Iraq. Now they are living in Iraq and some other foreign countries they immigrated to. It is also based on a number of letters of recommendations given to these interpreters during their work with the military. The paper tries also to prove that interpreters adopted other roles other than the linguistic ones. They were given a multiplicity of tasks to help facilitate the military missions.

The present paper seeks to address the strategies adopted to translate into English a corpus of i... moreThe present paper seeks to address the strategies adopted to translate into English a corpus of idioms extracted from the literary translation of Muhsin al-Ramli's novel "Scattered Crumbs"(Arabic version published in Cairo, 2000). The objectives of the paper are twofold. First, the theoretical part outlines the theoretical perspective on literary translation and then reviews the scene on idiomatic expressions, compares the various scholarly opinions on idioms and the translating strategies used in the literary context. Second, the practical aspect draws upon an analysis of a corpus of data collected from the above novel to arrive at the most frequent strategies applied by the translator, Yasmean S. Hanoosh, in her translation for the novel "Scattered Crumbs" ( ), published by The University of Arkansas. The paper has also pedagogical implications. In comparing the idioms in the source text of the novel with their translations in English, translation tutors and practitioners can use the novel as a course book to teach translation strategies in literary translation courses. Using the real examples extracted from the novel, students can practice the most frequently used strategies in how to deal with/ and render a variety of idiomatic expressions.

This paper is to analyze the conceptual metaphors underlying the metaphorical expressions in poli... moreThis paper is to analyze the conceptual metaphors underlying the metaphorical expressions in political discourse, it explores the role of conceptual metaphors on political language and the translation strategy adopted to translate. To prove this, a cognitive approach to metaphorical expressions translation in political discourse is used. The study focuses on the analysis of the conceptual mapping of the abstract concept of politics into some other source domains. The given examples are used to argue that we use existing physical concepts to conceptualize abstract concepts for easy understanding. The results obtained reveal that the set of conceptual metaphors underlying the political expressions are almost similar in both languages in terms of the source domains used as well as their collocation patterns. The paper adds a further support to the claim that metaphors are not only a rhetorical tool used by literary men but it reflects our thinking when dealing with abstract issues in terms of concrete experience. The study has pedagogical implications for media translation students. They can compile their own glossaries using the collocation patterns relevant to each metaphorical expression.

This paper is an attempt to examine, through examples, the significance of collocation patterns f... moreThis paper is an attempt to examine, through examples, the significance of collocation patterns for the translated text. To prove this, a corpus is collected from two translated articles in National Geographic magazine, Arabic version and their English counterparts. The given examples show that a great abundance of collocations patterns surfaced in the Arabic target texts (TT). The results obtained are used to argue that these patterns have cohesive, coherent, and aesthetic functions in the target text. To produce a translation that can read as much fluently and naturally as possible, professional translators work painstakingly to domesticate the source text as the magazine, in its Arabic version, is targeting different readership and culture. To accomplish their task, translators draw on their language competence especially 'collocation competence' as a domesticating strategy.

To prove this, a cognitive approach to metaphorical expressions translation in political discourse is used.
