Rand was a young freedom fighter during the Invid Invasion. Not much is known about his personal history beyond the fact that he is a self-taught survivor and a skilled wanderer and scavenger. Rand was the first to joinScott Bernard after meeting him onEarth, inevitably helping Bernard gather a small resistance group. Under Scott Bernard's guidance, Rand becomes an excellent fighter.

Background[]
Not much is known about Rand's past, but he had been living as a scavenger for years by the time of the Third Robotech War. He casually mentioned his parents at times but he did in the past tense, implying either they had passed away or he had cut ties with them.
Third Robotech War[]
Rand met Scott Bernard when he was scavenging inside a destroyed Garfish-class frigate where he found a functioning Cyclone veritech, however, upon testing the vehicle, he was located and attacked by Invid Scouts. He would be saved by Scott who wanted to ask him for directions but Rand ignored him to admire the Cyclone technology. He would tell Scott that he was familiarized with the terrain and that he also hated the Invid and wanted to join him in his crusade to destroy Reflex Point. Scott, while a little hesitant to having a civilian joining him, allowed to Rand to help him.
Rand and Scott would travel across South America, eventually meeting a young orphan girl namedAnnie LaBelle and the aloof red vigilanteRook Bartley, who would later join them after helping the mechanic known as"Lunk" with the help of fellow ERF survivor and singerLance Belmont. Together they would form the Robotech Rebels.
Due to being just a scavenger unlike the military-trained Scott and Lance or Rook who had been using her scavenged Red Cyclone for months and thus familiarized with its systems, Rand tended to have problems using the Cyclone for combat and had to learn from a combination of experience and advice from Scott. Eventually when the team found the Beta Fighter, both Rand and Rook were taught how to pilot Alpha Fighters with both becoming very good pilots relatively to Scott and Lance.
Unlike Rook, who had a very cynical outlook on life and the conflict against the Invid, Rand was a firm believer in ending the Invid occupation of Earth, and while both didn't get along most of the time, mostly due to Rook constantly making derogatory comments towards Rand for his lack of skill and experience in combat. They both ended developing a respect for each other by the end of the war.
During the final battle at Reflex Point, Rand admitted his feeling to Rook who reciprocated them and both started making jokes about now being a couple.
WhenAriel attempted to convince her mother the Invid Regiss to stop the fighting, Rand, Rook and Lance joined her to support her plea. Eventually, when the Regiss finally caved and decided to leave Earth after reaching the conclusion that humans were as evil as theRobotech Masters and the "Children of the Shadows" before them, taking all of her "children" and protoculture on Earth with her, ending the Third Robotech War.
Following the end of the war, Rand and Rook married and started travelling the world together in their Cyclones.

Full Name[]
On-screen, Rand's full name was never given, leaving some to speculate upon it.
InRobotech: The Roleplaying Game fromPalladium Books, Rand is given the full name ofRandolf O'Keefe. This is the only source to cite this as the character's full name. In the novels byJack McKinney, Rand's daughter is identified in chapter headings asMaria Bartley-Rand, implying thatRand is a family name. Additionally, theRobotech: The New Generation Sourcebook implied that he had forgotten his name. TheRobotech: Invid War gave an alternate backstory, saying his name isRand Somerville and he ran away from his adopted family.
From a real-world-perspective, the name 'Rand' seems to originate from thepilot, where he calls himselfRandy Barr.
