The Robert Cook-Deegan Human Genome Archive is founded on the bibliography of "The Gene Wars: Science, Politics, and the Human Genome", published in 1994 by W. W. Norton and Co., Inc. The full text of the book has been digitized and is available at no cost for educational use. Selected items from Dr. Cook-Deegan'sfull bibliography have also been digitized to support research on the history of genomics. In addition, complete transcripts and selected audio recordings from sixteen interviews conducted by Dr. Cook-Deegan provide a unique oral history and diverse perspectives on the issues around the project.

The Human Genome Project (HGP) was an international 13-year effort, 1990 to 2003. Primary goals were to discover the complete set of human genes and make them accessible for further biological study and determine the complete sequence of DNA bases in the human genome.
