Pizzagate is the (admittedly rather silly and unoriginal) name of an actualconspiracy theory claimingHillary Clinton is secretly involved in apedophile ring centered around a pizza restaurant inWashington, D.C. This outlandish theory was spawned froma highly peculiar pattern-analytical reading of the hacked emails leaked byWikileaks belonging toJohn Podesta, the then-manager of Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign, because the highly suspect code phrase "cheese pizza" figured among said correspondence. The fact that the mention ofcheese pizza was much more interesting tosome people than theactual emails of any possible importance whatsoever sayssomething about theconspiracy crowd.

The Pizzagate theory was initially promoted and popularized on the notoriousPoe-nest4chan and onReddit. It spread quickly over variousfake news websites, as well as viasocial media platforms such asFacebook andTwitter, and culminated in anarmed man, arguably acting on the suggestion of oneAlex Jones, entering thelion's den pizza parlor in question, rifle in hand, to "self-investigate" the claims in December 2016.
