I have an RPi 4 up andrunning and I want to be able to access it over the internet using TigerVNC.

I can access the Pi from a laptop that is on my local wifi network, but I cannot access it from outside my local network.

I have an ATT router, my pi is connected to it via wifi.

I did go into the router and configure port forwarding for port 80 for the pi.

I still cannot connect via the TigerVNC - I get the message 'the machine actively refused' the connection.

I'm sure i'm missing a step somewhere but not having luck so far trying to find an answer.

I'm a Pi / Linux beginner FYI.

Thanks for any help!

  • "I'm sure i'm missing a step somewhere" like any details or diagnostics. What OS is installed (detail including version)? Have you enabled VNC? What have you tried? At the moment this is just an "it doesn't work" comment.CommentedDec 9 at 21:55

NOTE "VNC by default uses TCP port 5900+N where N is the display number"CommentedDec 9 at 23:47

Raspberry Pi Connect works on Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm or later. and doesn't require fiddling with port numbers.CommentedDec 9 at 23:50

Milliways has already answered the question in the comments. VNC does not use port 80. Unless you have changed from the default port, it is port 5900 that you must forward. (And, if youhave changed the port, forward that one.)
