Formula E is the pinnacle of electric open-wheel motorsport, conceived as a new series sanctioned by the FIA in 2011. The inaugural championship took place in 2014 with the first race at the Beijing Olympic Park.

The world's premier electric racing series was born from the changing focus of the automotive industry towards electrically powered vehicles, and has evolved through a range of cars and new racing formats throughout its short history.

Originally conceived as an idea between FIA President Jean Todt and Formula E Chairman Alejandro Agag, the series looks to showcase the potential of sustainable mobility and electric vehicles.

For the 2025 season (Season 11), Formula E introduced the Gen3 EVO car, an evolution of the original Gen3 introduced in 2023 (Season 9). It is standardised vehicle raced by all teams in the competition for S12, although the OEMs produce the powertrains. Season 13 (2027) will see the brand-new Gen4 introduced.

The Gen3 EVO features all-wheel drive and has a top speed of 200 mph (320 km/h), whilst it is also the fastest accelerating FIA single-seater ever, achieving 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) in just 1.82 seconds.

Formula E races are held on adapted street circuits and a variety of permanent venues, with several manufacturers involved, ranging from Stellantis (DS Automobiles) to Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan, Mahindra and Lola. As for customer teams, Andretti, Envision, Cupra Kiro and Citreön complete the grid.

The competition is currently contested by a total of 10 teams each fielding two drivers. For the 2019 season the series was granted FIA World Championship status.

In addition to the same standard points scoring system as F1, Formula E has an in-race requirement called Attack Mode, in which drivers gain an extra 50kW of power by driving off the racing line and through a designated area. This must be used twice per race, with the extra power ranging from two to six minutes per use, with a total of eight minutes to be used during a race.

However, another in-race requirement was introduced in S11, known as Pit Boost. On double-header weekends, one race will feature Pit Boost, which sees drivers pit for 30 seconds and receive a 10% boost of energy. For S13, Pit Boost races will also require Attack Mode to be used once.

Among the manufacturers, Renault is the most successful to have competed in the series, securing three teams' championship wins in 2014, 2015 and 2017, followed by DS Automobiles and Mercedes-EQ with two titles and Abt Schaeffler, Envision, Jaguar and Porsche with one.

Former F1 driver Jean-Eric Vergne is the only driver to have won the Formula E title twice with DS Techeetah, whilst Oliver Rowland, Pascal Wehrlein, Jake Dennis, Stoffel Vandoorne, Nyck de Vries, Antonio Felix da Costa, Lucas di Grassi, Sebastian Buemi and Nelson Piquet Jr have secured a Formula E championship. Rowland won the 2025 drivers' championship, whilst Porsche won the teams' and manufacturers' titles.

For 2026, Formula E will stage 17 rounds, with the season actually kicking off in São Paulo in December 2025 and concluding in London in August 2025. In between, there will be visits to Mexico City, Miami, Jeddah, Madrid, Berlin, Monaco, Sanya, Shanghai and Tokyo.
