Nascido como David Robert Jones, seu debute musical foi a canção de 1964 "Liza Jane" do grupo Davie Jones & the King Bees. Realizou dois outros singles em 1965 sob os nomes de The Manish Boys and Davy Jones & the Lower Third. Sua primeira canção com o nome David Bowie foi "Can't Help Thinking About Me", single de 1966 realizado com os Lower Third. Seu single seguinte, "Do Anything You Say", também realizado em 1966, foi o primeiro creditado simplesmente a David Bowie.
