APartição da Índia[1] conduziu à criação em14 de agosto de1947 e15 de agosto de1947, respectivamente, de doisestadossoberanos, como resultado da independência daÍndia britânica concedida peloReino Unido: oDomínio do Paquistão (posteriormenteRepública islâmica do Paquistão); e aUnião Indiana (posteriormenteRepública da Índia). A 'partição' refere-se àdivisão da província de Bengala da Índia britânica na província paquistanesa de Bengala Oriental (posteriormentePaquistão Oriental hoje Bangladesh) e da província indiana deBengala Ocidental, e também à partição de forma similar da região doPunjab da Índia britânica entre os dois novos estados: a província dePunjab (Paquistão) e na província indiana dePunjab (Índia). Houve além da divisão doExército da Índia Britânica, doIndian Civil Service e de outros serviços administrativos, de transportes, do tesouro central e de outros bens.
