A 19-year-old named Edgar C. Burnz confessed to thecrime, was arrested, and held at the county jail in White Plains,where, in July 1900, he led about 100 prisoners in an unsuccessfulescape attempt. Burnz smoked as many as eighty cigarettes a day, andthe press dubbed him the "Cigarette Boy Murderer". At his murdertrial in December 1900, his defense was that cigarette smoking hadmade him insane. He was convicted, sentenced to life in prison, butreleased about 1920, and became an Episcopal minister.Burial location unknown.
