Henry Reed Rathbone (1837-1911) — Born in Albany,AlbanyCounty, N.Y.,July 1,1837.Lawyer;major in the Union Army during the Civil War; on April 14, 1865, hewas seated in the box at Ford's Theater with PresidentAbrahamLincoln; when John Wilkes Booth shot the president, Rathboneattempted to apprehend Booth, and suffered knife wounds; subsequentlyhis mental health deteriorated; U.S. Consul inHanover, as of 1882-83.On December 23, 1883, hekilledhis wife, and stabbed himself in a suicide attempt; he waschargedwith murder,convicted,and found insane; he died more than 25 years later, in theAsylum forthe Criminal Insane, Hildesheim,Germany,August14, 1911 (age74 years, 44days).Original interment at Stadtfriedhof Engesohde; reinterment 1952 tounknown location.
