In the state council meeting in Hartford,he said, "I am against adjournment. The day of judgment is eitherapproaching, or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for anadjournment; if it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. I wishtherefore that candles may be brought."JohnGreenleaf Whittier wrote a poem about this incident in 1866;JohnF.
