NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — “Can you hear me now?” may be a phrase of the past for some subway commuters in Brooklyn and Queens.
AT&T and Boldyn Networks have activated5G cell service in the tunnels for the MTA’s G line. The expanded service will be available between the Court Square subway station in Queens and the Bedford–Nostrand Avenue station in Brooklyn.
“By working closely with Boldyn Networks and the MTA, we’re helping ensure reliable, high-speed 5G is part of the everyday transit experience for New Yorkers,” said John Emra, president of AT&T’s Atlantic Region. “We’re proud to be the first and only carrier to deliver that enhanced experience to the G line.”
The move comes after 5G service was previously launched in the Joralemon Street tunnel, which services the Nos. 4 and 5 trains, the42nd St. tunnel that serves the Shuttle, and the Canarsie tunnel, which serves the L train.
“Progress like this happens through collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to the people of New York,” said Ken Ranger, SVP of Transit Operations, US, Boldyn Networks. “These milestones represent more than infrastructure, they’re about improving daily life for riders and creating a smarter, more connected city.”
Boldyn Networks plans to expand cell service to all 418 miles of track in the MTA’s subway tunnels.
