Exploring Educational Planning, Teacher Beliefs, and Teacher Practices During the Pandemic: A Study of Science and Technology-Based Universities in China.Yang Gao,Gang Zeng,Yongliang Wang,Amir Aziz Khan &Xiaochen Wang -2022 -Frontiers in Psychology 13.
With the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, university teachers are coping with and adjusting to online teaching platforms. In this concurrent mixed-methods study, 10 science and technology universities as the research sites were first chosen, and educational planning in these sites during the pandemic was examined; then, eight selected teacher participants in these sites were interviewed to report how their beliefs and practices changed during the pandemic echoing the examined educational planning. The results show that educational planning and policies (...) assisted teachers in accommodating the new demands and changes during the pandemic; teachers' beliefs and practices generally echoed the educational planning and policies, with certain tensions still existing. The discussion part of the study is centered around emergency remote teaching and planning, tensions between teacher beliefs and practices, and the shift from emergency remote teaching to regular, sustainable online schooling. The study provides administrators and teacher educators with insights on how emergency remote teaching can be planned and implemented during an unprecedented time. (shrink)

Agent-patient similarity affects sentence structure in language production: evidence from subject omissions in Mandarin.Yaling Hsiao,Yannan Gao &Maryellen C. MacDonald -2014 -Frontiers in Psychology 5:104735.
Interference effects from semantically similar items are well-known in studies of single word production, where the presence of semantically similar distractor words slows picture naming. This article examines the consequences of this interference in sentence production and tests the hypothesis that in situations of high similarity-based interference, producers are more likely to omit one of the interfering elements than when there is low semantic similarity and thus low interference. This work investigated language production in Mandarin, which allows subject noun phrases (...) to be omitted in discourse contexts in which the subject entity has been previously mentioned in the discourse. We hypothesize that Mandarin speakers omit the subject more often when the subject and the object entities are conceptually similar. A corpus analysis of simple transitive sentences found higher rates of subject omission when both the subject and object were animate (potentially yielding similarity-based interference) than when the subject was animate and object was inanimate. A second study manipulated subject-object animacy in a picture description task and replicated this result: participants omitted the animate subject more often when the object was also animate than when it was inanimate. These results suggest that similarity-based interference affects sentence forms, particularly when the agent of the action is mentioned in the sentence. Alternatives and mechanisms for this effect are discussed. (shrink)

Fault Tree Interval Analysis of Complex Systems Based on Universal Grey Operation.Feng Zhang,Shiwang Tan,Leilei Zhang,Yameng Wang &Yang Gao -2019 -Complexity 2019:1-8.
The objective of this study is to propose a new operation method based on the universal grey number to overcome the shortcomings of typical interval operation in solving system fault trees. First, the failure probability ranges of the bottom events are described according to the conversion rules between the interval number and universal grey number. A more accurate system reliability calculation is then obtained based on the logical relationship between the AND gates and OR gates of a fault tree and (...) universal grey number arithmetic. Then, considering an aircraft landing gear retraction system as an example, the failure probability range of the top event is obtained through universal grey operation. Next, the reliability of the aircraft landing gear retraction system is evaluated despite insufficient statistical information describing failures. The example demonstrates that the proposed method provides many advantages in resolving the system reliability problem despite poor information, yielding benefits for the function of the interval operation, and overcoming the drawback of solution interval enlargement under different orders of interval operation. John Dewey's Aesthetic Legacy in China.Baogui Zhang &Yanping Gao -2024 -The Journal of Aesthetic Education 58 (4):13-27.
Modern China's acceptance of Dewey's legacy of aesthetic thought is divided into three main periods. In 1906–49, Dewey's _Art as Experience_ was noticed, but due to the fact that China was more concerned with the social realities and national crisis at that time, its aesthetic thought appeared as an accessory to Dewey's social philosophy and educational thought, and its rich significance was properly realized only within the practice of aesthetic education. From 1949 to 1978, Dewey's aesthetics was effectively suppressed through (...) China's ideological storms. From 1978 to the present, benefitting through China's policies of reform and opening, Dewey's aesthetics gradually gained the attention of Chinese academics and found expression in considerable research that develops the book's legacy in distinctive forms of contemporary Chinese aesthetics: life aesthetics, somaesthetics, and ecological aesthetics. Consumer satisfaction-oriented emotional marketing in foreign trade.Lei Zhu,Yanhua Gao,Weijing Chen &Hao Ren -2022 -Frontiers in Psychology 13.
This research uses an experimental approach to investigate the relationship between market orientation of a company and its level of success in international business. The aim of the study was to develop and use a market orientation scale that is appropriate to the sector. It was discovered that there are four hidden traits that drive market orientation. These include customers, rivals, departmental response, and overall customer satisfaction. According to the results, orientation toward one's customers is more essential than any of (...) the other traits, while orientation toward one's competitors has an inverted U-shaped connection with performance. The performance of the firm was not found to correlate in any way with the responsiveness of its departments. With the help of the comprehensive conceptualization, managers are able to develop specific kinds of orientations that are essential for higher levels of performance. (shrink)

An Investigation of the Psychometric Properties of the Chinese Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (Chinese TEIQue-SF).Anita Feher,Gonggu Yan,Donald H. Saklofske,Rachel A. Plouffe &Yan Gao -2019 -Frontiers in Psychology 10:414169.
The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF). Analyses were performed using a sample of undergraduates (N = 585) recruited from four universities across China. Confirmatory factor analysis of the Chinese TEIQue-SF supported the one-factor structure of trait emotional intelligence. Measurement invariance analyses were conducted across the Chinese sample and a sample of Canadian undergraduate students (N = 638). Although the two samples demonstrated configural and partial metric invariance, (...) scalar invariance was not found. Cross-cultural implications and explanations of the present findings, as well as suggestions for future research are discussed. (shrink)

An Improved Image Processing Based on Deep Learning Backpropagation Technique.Yang Gao &Yue Tian -2022 -Complexity 2022:1-10.
In terms of image processing, encryption plays the main role in the field of image transmission. Using one algorithm of deep learning, such as neural network backpropagation, increases the performance of encryption by learning the parameters and weights derived from the image itself. The use of more than one layer in the neural network improves the performance of the algorithm. Also, in the process of image encryption, randomness is an important component, especially when used by smart learning methods. Deep neural (...) networks are related to pixels used to manipulate position and value according to the predicted new value given from a variable neural system. It also includes messy encrypted images used via applying randomness and increasing the key space in addition to using the logistic and Henon map for complexity. The main goal of any encryption method is to increase the complexity of the encrypted image to be difficult or impossible to decrypt the image without the proposed key. One of the important measurements for image encryption is the histogram and how it can be uniformed by the proposed method. Variables of randomness are used as features for the deep learning system, with feedback during iteration. An ideal image processing encryption yields high messy images by keeping the quality. Experimental results showed the backpropagation algorithm achieved better results than other algorithms. (shrink)

Application of virtual simulation situational model in Russian spatial preposition teaching.Yanrong Gao,R. T. Kassymova &Yong Luo -2022 -Frontiers in Psychology 13.
The purpose is to improve the teaching quality of Russian spatial prepositions in colleges. This work takes teaching Russian spatial prepositions as an example to study the key technologies in 3D Virtual Simulation teaching. 3D VS situational teaching is a high-end visual teaching technology. VS situation construction focuses on Human-Computer Interaction to explore and present a realistic language teaching scene. Here, the Steady State Visual Evoked Potential is used to control Brain-Computer Interface. An SSVEP-BCI system is constructed through the Hybrid (...) Frequency-Phase Modulation. The acquisition system can obtain the current SSVEP from the user's brain to know which module the user is watching to complete instructions encoded by the module. Experiments show that the recognition accuracy of the proposed SSVEP-BCI system based on HFPM increases with data length. When the data length is 0.6-s, the Information Transfer Rate reaches the highest: 242.21 ± 46.88 bits/min. Therefore, a high-speed BCI character input system based on SSVEP is designed using HFPM. The main contribution of this work is to build a SSVEP-BCI system based on joint frequency phase modulation. It is better than the currently-known brain computer interface character input system, and is of great value to optimize the performance of the virtual simulation situation system for Russian spatial preposition teaching. 14. Summarizing judicial documents: a hybrid extractive- abstractive model with legal domain knowledge.Yan Gao,Jie Wu,Zhengtao Liu &Juan Li -forthcoming -Artificial Intelligence and Law:1-29.
The automatic summarization of judgment documents is a challenging task due to their length and the dispersed nature of the important information they contain. The prevailing approach to tackling the summarization of lengthy documents involves the integration of both extractive and abstractive summarization models. However, current extractive models face challenges in capturing all essential details due to the scattered distribution of pertinent information within judgment documents. Additionally, the existing abstractive models still grapple with the problem of "hallucinations" which leads to (...) generating inaccurate information. In our work, we proposed a novel hybrid legal summarization method that incorporates legal domain knowledge into both the extractive model and abstractive model. The method consists of two parts: (1) The rhetorical role of sentences is identified by the sentence-level sequence labeling method, and the rhetorical information is integrated into the extractive model based on WoBERT through the conditional normalization to ensure that the identification of key sentences is both precise and complete. (2) The pre-trained model RoFormer is combined with Seq2Seq to construct a long text summarization model, and the prior knowledge in the external resources and the document itself is introduced into the decoding process to improve the faithfulness and coherence of the composed summary. In addition, the contrastive learning strategy is employed during the training process to enhance the robustness of the abstractive model. Experimental results on the CAIL2020 dataset show that the proposed model is superior to the baseline methods. Furthermore, our method outperforms GPT and other LLMs in processing judgment documents.
