As the need for more diversity in business ethics is becoming more pressing in our global world, we provide an historical study of a Fair Trade (FT) movement, born in rural Mexico. We first focus on the basic assumptions of its founders, which include a worker–priest, Frans van der Hoff, a group of native Indians and local farmers who formed a cooperative, and an NGO, Max Havelaar. The complexity of industrial reality, the plurality of legitimate perspectives on risks and the role of emotions in decision-making raise important ethical issues in risk management that are usually overlooked in engineering. Using a questionnaire answered by 200 engineering students from a major engineering school in Canada, the purpose of this study was to assess how their training has influenced their perceptions toward these issues. While our results challenge the stereotypical portrait of the engineer, they also suggest that the current (...) engineering education might fail to empower engineers to engage in ethical risk management. We therefore propose an active-learning method to help in this matter. Carried out through workshops with 34 students in chemical engineering, the effectiveness of this method has been evaluated using group interviews and questionnaires. Our results suggest that such an approach is effective, at least in the short run, to motivate students to engage in ethical risk management and to trigger reflectivity on what it means to be an engineer today. Risk management is certainly one of the most important professional responsibilities of an engineer. As such, this activity needs to be combined with complex ethical reflections, and this requirement should therefore be explicitly integrated in engineering education. In this article, we analyse how this nexus between ethics and risk management is expressed in the engineering education research literature. It was done by reviewing 135 articles published between 1980 and March 1, 2016. These articles have been selected from 21 major journals (...) that specialize in engineering education, engineering ethics and ethics education. Our review suggests that risk management is mostly used as an anecdote or an example when addressing ethics issues in engineering education. Further, it is perceived as an ethical duty or requirement, achieved through rational and technical methods. However, a small number of publications do offer some critical analyses of ethics education in engineering and their implications for ethical risk and safety management. Therefore, we argue in this article that the link between risk management and ethics should be further developed in engineering education in order to promote the progressive change toward more socially and environmentally responsible engineering practices. Several research trends and issues are also identified and discussed in order to support the engineering education community in this project. (shrink)

La financiarisation du marché est associée à un déficit démocratique, à un accroissement des inégalités et à un contexte mondial d’incertitude et de crises. Dans le présent article, nous revisitons les vues d’Adam Smith au xviiie siècle sur ces sujets, au-delà de sa caricature néolibérale. Nous suggérons que le père de l’économie moderne, sur qui l’on fonde l’idéologie de la « main invisible » en économie et le « laissez-faire » pour les entreprises, recommandait en fait l’instauration de régulations strictes (...) des banques et de la finance. Après avoir présenté les régulations que Smith a proposées en son temps, nous tirons de son œuvre plusieurs suggestions de réforme pour les secteurs bancaire et financier, contribuant ainsi au débat actuel sur ces questions, tout en l’enracinant dans son contexte historique. Dans cet article, nous évaluons l’exécution actuelle des recommandations formulées après le déluge du Saguenay. L’étude de ce cas permet également d’analyser de façon critique la nouvelle loi au Québec sur la Sécurité civile, en la comparant aux avancées de l’éthique dite « postmoderne ». En regroupant ces recommandations en cinq catégories, il devient évident que leur exécution, plus de six ans après l’événement, reste surtout limitée à trois domaines spécifiques : les changements légaux, les changements technologiques et ceux qui (...) sont reliés aux télécommunications. Nous verrons que ces changements n’ont pas encore touché en profondeur ni les problématiques stratégiques, ni celles relatives au tissu culturel, incluant les considérations éthiques. Sur la base d’une évaluation de la littérature existante, des études détaillées de cette crise et des entrevues conduites avec douze personnes qui connaissent bien ce dossier, nous avons identifié la nature des blocages qui sont à l’origine de ces manques d’apprentissage et nous proposons des stratégies de déblocage. En s’appuyant sur un cas concret, cet article offre une lecture actuelle du manque d’intégration de considérations et de mesures éthiques dans le domaine de la gestion des risques et des crises. Il suggère en outre que les enjeux éthiques sont en compétition avec d’autres enjeux et que souvent la priorité est accordée à ces derniers. (shrink)
