- The Development of a Sustainability-Oriented Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Education Framework: A Perspective Study.Yu Shu,Shin-Jia Ho &Tien-Chi Huang -2020 -Frontiers in Psychology 11:546725.Innovation can include creativity, innovation mechanisms, and entrepreneurship. The ability to innovate is an important indicator of economic and social development, and creativity is an educational indicator of learning effectiveness. This article explores creativity and innovation from an educational perspective and proposes a sustainability-oriented creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship education framework that uses creative problem solving. This framework contains four layers and three dimensions. The first layer concerns the thinker and basic structure, and the second layer contains the catalyst of sustainable (...) development goals (SDGs). The third layer is the advanced structure of cultivating SDG thinkers. The final layer is the generation of students who will attempt to start up social enterprises. The three aspects apply the creative nature of diffuse thinking to social innovation; apply demand expansion to extend individual needs to societal needs; and apply educational goal development to encourage sustainability. We expect this framework, which can turn thinkers into doers through creativity and social innovation, to apply to different disciplines. This article provides suggestions for (1) designing curriculum in creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship education (CIE) for different education level and (2) transitioning technical and vocational education in developing economies on the road to sustainable development. - Limits on the Agent‐First Strategy: Evidence from Children's Comprehension of a Transitive Construction in Korean.Gyu-HoShin -2021 -Cognitive Science 45 (9):e13038.It has long been believed across languages that the Agent‐First strategy, a comprehension heuristic that maps the first noun onto the agent role, is a general cognitive bias which applies automatically and faithfully to children's comprehension. The present study asks how this strategy interplays with such grammatical cues as the number of overt arguments and the presence of case‐marking in Korean, an SOV language with case‐marking by dedicated markers. To investigate whether and how these cues affect the operation of this (...) strategy, we measure children's comprehension of a transitive construction (with scrambling and omission of sentential components) in a novel experimental setting where arguments and case markers were obscured to varying degrees through acoustic masking. We find that children do not demonstrate the agent‐first interpretation strongly in the noun–verb pattern without case‐marking, showing their uncertainty about the thematic role of the nominal when it is both the only argument in the sentence and lacks case‐marking. They perform significantly better in the patterns with additional cues, the impact of which is asymmetric by age and by the nature of alignment between cues from word order and case‐marking. These findings suggest that, for Korean‐speaking children's comprehension of a transitive construction, the Agent‐First strategy is activated properly only in conjunction with other types of interpretive cues. Bookmark - The interplay of verbs and argument structure constructions in second language processing: roles of verb’s lexical properties and verb–construction association.Hyunwoo Kim &Gyu-HoShin -2025 -Cognitive Linguistics 36 (1):59-88.While verbs and argument structure constructions are essential for deriving sentence meaning, their roles in sentence processing remains less known. To address this issue, the present study explored how a verb’s lexical properties and the strength of verb–construction associations influence second language (L2) sentence processing. In two self-paced reading experiments, Korean-speaking learners of English and native English speakers read English argument structure constructions containing verbs with varying lexical properties and association strength. In both Experiment 1 (involving the prepositional dative construction) (...) and Experiment 2 (involving the caused-motion construction), only the L2-English learners, and not the native speakers, spent more time integrating the target constructions with verbs of weaker associations than those with stronger associations. Furthermore, the learners exhibited greater difficulty with verb–construction integration when the verbs were less frequent and less concrete; L2 proficiency did not modulate these effects. Our findings support the constructionist approach, suggesting that both verbs and verb–construction associations play an instrumental role in sentence comprehension. (shrink)
- Conflicts between mining companies and communities: Institutional environments and conflict resolution approaches.Chang Hoon Oh,JiyoungShin &Shuna Shu Ham Ho -2023 -Business Ethics, the Environment and Responsibility 32 (2):638-656.Although companies recognize the importance of social responsibility and community engagement, conflicts between companies and communities have been noticeably increasing. To better understand the role of institutional environments in company–community conflicts, we analyze two mining conflicts—Minera Yanacocha's Minas Conga extension project in Peru and Minera Los Pelambres' El Mauro Tailings Dam in Chile. Our findings imply that, to prevent negative consequences and alleviate company–community conflicts, mining companies should address underlying structural causes and pursue informal approaches in order to obtain and (...) maintain their social license. We find that better formal institutional environments not only alleviate conflict intensity but also facilitate informal approaches through which companies and communities can cooperate to resolve conflicts. The best practice would be to start and continue dialogs between communities and companies, mediated by impartial governments, to understand the concerns of the counterparty and find means by which to address the causes. - Reliability, and Convergent and Discriminant Validity of Gaming Disorder Scales: A Meta-Analysis.Seowon Yoon,Yeji Yang,Eunbin Ro,Woo-Young Ahn,Jueun Kim,Suk-HoShin,Jeanyung Chey &Kee-Hong Choi -2021 -Frontiers in Psychology 12.Background: An association between gaming disorder and the symptoms of common mental disorders is unraveled yet. In this preregistered study, we quantitatively synthesized reliability, convergent and discriminant validity of GD scales to examine association between GD and other constructs.Methods: Five representative GD instruments were chosen based on recommendations by the previous systematic review study to conduct correlation meta-analyses and reliability generalization. A systematic literature search was conducted through Pubmed, Proquest, Embase, and Google Scholar to identify studies that reported information on (...) either reliability or correlation with related variables. 2,124 studies were full-text assessed as of October 2020, and 184 were quantitatively synthesized. Conventional Hedges two-level meta-analytic method was utilized.Results: The result of reliability generalization reported a mean coefficient alpha of 0.86 and a mean test-retest estimate of 0.86. Estimated effect sizes of correlation between GD and the variables were as follows: 0.33 with depression, 0.29 with anxiety, 0.30 with aggression, –0.22 with quality of life, 0.29 with loneliness, 0.56 with internet addiction, and 0.40 with game playtime, respectively. The result of moderator analyses, funnel and forest plots, and publication bias analyses were also presented.Discussion and Conclusion: All five GD instruments have good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Relatively few studies reported the test-retest reliability. The result of correlation meta-analysis revealed that GD scores were only moderately associated with game playtime. Common psychological problems such as depression and anxiety were found to have a slightly smaller association with GD than the gaming behavior. GD scores were strongly correlated with internet addiction. Further studies should adopt a rigorous methodological procedure to unravel the bidirectional relationship between GD and other psychopathologies.Limitations: The current study did not include gray literature. The representativeness of the five tools included in the current study could be questioned. - Revisiting early sociological studies on addiction.Jia-Shin Chen -2014 -History of the Human Sciences 27 (5):111-125.Addiction is a significant issue in many aspects but no explanatory closure has been attained. The overemphasis on the brain disease paradigm upheld by the National Institute on Drug Abuse may run serious risks, and the present study intends to counteract this partiality. Drawing on Ludwik Fleck’s notion of thought collectives, this article offers a close reading of the works of sociologists Bingham Dai and Alfred R. Lindesmith vis-à-vis other coeval biomedical approaches. Individuals within the same thought collective, such as (...) Dai and Lindesmith, have different views although they share certain thought styles. As noted in this study, inter-collective communication is not typically antagonistic and may form some liaison under certain circumstances. These findings imply that communication among collectives may facilitate creative liaison, as suggested by Fleck. This study aims to enrich the understanding of addiction by coordinating biomedical and sociological sciences through minimizing, if not erasing, their intellectual antagonism and social distance. - Acculturation of Social Darwinism since 1910 : the thoughts of Ahn Jung-geun, Park Eun-sik, Ahn Chang-ho andShin Chae-ho. 이인화 -2014 -동서철학연구(Dong Seo Cheol Hak Yeon Gu; Studies in Philosophy East-West) 74 (74):231-262.사회진화론은 1880년대에 초기 개화사상가들에 의해 한국사회에 수용되었고 1900년대에는 일종의 시대정신으로 여겨지며 당시 국제사회를 해석하는 가장 유력한 사상적 프레임으로 기능하였다. 그러나 지금까지의 연구들은 1910년을 기점으로 사회진화론의 사상적 기능이 소멸되었다고 보거나 제한된 영역에서의 사상적 양상만을 고찰하였다. 본고에서는 1910년 이후로도 사회진화론의 영향력은 다양한 사상 속에 침투되어 변용적으로 존재해왔으며 동시에 그것을 극복하기 위한 시도도 있었음을 밝히고자 하였다. 먼저 안중근은 동양 3국[황인종]의 연대를 통해 서구 세력[백인종]의 침략을 막아야 한다는 동양평화론을 주장하였다. 이는 인종주의에 사회진화론을 결합한 것으로 서구의 침략을 일종의 동종(同種) 혹은 약자 연대를 통해 대항하고자 하는 (...) ‘저항적 인종주의’의 성격을 띠었다. 박은식은 사회진화론적 진보의 논리를 유학에 적용하여 당시 유학이 가지고 있었던 봉건성을 극복하고, 유학의 대동사상, 성선론 등을 통해 사회진화론의 인종주의적 우열론과 약육강식론의 비도덕성을 극복하고자 하였다. 1919년에는 제1차 세계대전 이후 파리강화회의가 개최되면서 ‘세계평화’가 화두로 제시되었고 ‘민족자결주의’, ‘세계주의’, ‘평화주의’ 등의 관념이 나타났다. 또한 러시아 혁명 및 사회주의 국가 건설 등을 계기로 사회주의, 아나키즘 등 새로운 사상이 등장하면서 사회진화론적 세계관에 균열을 가져온다. 이러한 사상적 흐름 속에서 안창호는 국제사회에서 여전히 약육강식의 논리가 통용되고 있음을 비판적으로 인식하고는 있었지만, 현실적으로 국제사회로부터 독립국으로서의 자격을 인정을 받기 위해서는 자강의 힘을 길러야 한다고 주장하였다. 그러나 그 힘의 토대에 근면, 성실, 신용 등 개신교적 자본주의 윤리와 민족주의적 공동체의식을 도입하여 사회진화론적 경쟁의 비도덕성을 극복하고자 하였다. 신채호는 약육강식에 의한 열강의 식민 지배를 ‘민중직접혁명’을 통해 타도해야한다고 주장했다. 이 과정에서 그는 세계 식민지 민중과의 연대를 주장하기도 했다. 그러나 역사를 ‘아(我)와 비아(非我)의 투쟁’ 즉, 자민족과 타민족의 생존투쟁의 기록이라고 봤던 그의 역사관은 사회진화론적 관점을 완전히 극복하지는 못한 것으로 보인다. 안중근과 박은식의 사상은 1910년을 기점으로 한 것이고 안창호와 신채호의 사상은 1919년 이후 주창된 것이다. 이들은 초기 사회진화론자들처럼 약육강식의 논리를 무비판적으로 수용하면서 소위 ‘문명국’의 ‘비문명국’에 대한 지배나 착취를 원리로서 인정하는 사고에서는 벗어났지만, 현실을 사회진화론적 프레임으로 바라보는 사고를 완전히 단절해내지는 못했다. 그러나 동양평화론, 유교, 자유민주주의, 아나키즘 등 각자가 취한 여러 가지 사상적 토대 위에서 사회진화론의 이론적, 현실적 문제를 극복하려는 시도가 나타났는데 그것이 1910년 이후 한국 사상계의 하나의 큰 특징이라고 결론지을 수 있다.
