    Exploring self‐care practices and health beliefs among men in the context of emerging infectious diseases: Lessons from the Mpox pandemic in Brazil.Carolina daSilva Bulcão,Pedro E. G. Prates,Iago M. B. Pedrosa,Guilherme R. de Santana Santos,Layze B. de Oliveira,Jhonata de Souza Joaquim,Lilian C. G. de Almeida,Caíque J. N. Ribeiro,Glauber W. dos SantosSilva,Felipe A. Machuca-Contreras,Anderson R. de Sousa,Isabel A. C. Mendes &Álvaro F. L. de Sousa -2024 -Nursing Inquiry 31 (3):e12635.
Our goal was to explore self‐care practices among men who have sex with men in the context of Mpox in Brazil. This study used qualitative research methods, including interviews and thematic analysis, to collect and analyze data from male participants across the Brazilian territory. The narratives unveil men's perspectives on self‐care, risk reduction, and health beliefs during the Mpox pandemic. Our findings highlight a multifaceted approach to self‐care among men, encompassing hygiene, physical contact management, mask usage, skin lesion vigilance, and (...) adherence to official guidelines. Men's attitudes toward sexual behaviors emphasize the importance of reducing sexual partners, practicing safe sex, and combating misinformation through accurate information dissemination. The development of these behaviors and self‐care practices can be facilitated by nurses guided by Dorothea Orem's Self‐Care Theory, supported by patient‐centered care, with strategies to address and confront the stigma associated with the disease and provide emotional support. Thus, the study underscores the pivotal role of self‐care in mitigating infection risks, especially in the context of emerging infectious diseases. It acknowledges the impact of socio‐cultural factors and healthcare policies on men's preventive measures. However, it also recognizes limitations, such as potential bias due to stigma concerns and a nonrepresentative sample. Ultimately, the research advocates for tailored education, promotion of gender equity, and healthcare empowerment to effectively manage health risks in such contexts. (shrink)

The Influence of Parents, Coaches, and Peers in the Long-Term Development of Highly Skilled and Less Skilled Volleyball Players.Patrícia Coutinho,João Ribeiro,Sara Mesquita daSilva,António M. Fonseca &Isabel Mesquita -2021 -Frontiers in Psychology 12.
The purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions of highly skilled and less skilled volleyball players about the influences that parents, coaches, and peers had on their sport development and performance achievement. Highly skilled (n= 30) and less skilled (n= 30) volleyball players participated in semi-structured retrospective interviews to explain how parents, coaches and peers may have influenced their sport participation. Data was analyzed through a process of content analysis. Results indicated that parents, coaches, and peers had an (...) important influence in player's sport development but differing according to players' expertise level. Concerning to parental influences, tangible support during the early years of development was mentioned by all players. However, parents' level of involvement and parenting styles revealed interesting differences between highly skilled and less skilled players. Highly skilled players perceived a moderate parental involvement and an autonomy-supportive parenting style, while less skilled players referred a excessive parental involvement in players' sport participation. Coaches influences showed to have some similarities in the early years with all players mentioning coaches as caring and recognizing their value as an athlete. However, highly skilled players described a different training environment characterized by a demanding coach, individualized instruction, and specific goal setting. Regarding peers' influence, all players recognized that friends were not only one of the main reasons to start playing volleyball, but also an important source of support to remain engaged and staying motivated to do sport. Highly skilled players, however, mentioned the importance of teammates' positive push and critiques during practice for enhancing their motivation, team cohesion and friendship. They also highlighted the importance of friends outside of sport in the later years of their career by acting as an escape from all the pressure that emerged from volleyball training and competition demands. Overall, these findings highlight different social influences according to the players' expertise level suggesting the need to examine more extensively the nature of significant others' support on athlete and talent development. Ethical issues related to the access to orphan drugs in Brazil: the case of mucopolysaccharidosis type I.Raquel Boy,Ida V. D. Schwartz,Bárbara C. Krug,Luiz C. Santana-da-Silva,Carlos E. Steiner,Angelina X. Acosta,Erlane M. Ribeiro,Marcial F. Galera,Paulo G. C. Leivas &Marlene Braz -2011 -Journal of Medical Ethics 37 (4):233-239.
Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I) is a rare lysosomal storage disorder treated with bone marrow transplantation or enzyme replacement therapy with laronidase, a high-cost orphan drug. Laronidase was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency in 2003 and by the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency in 2005. Many Brazilian MPS I patients have been receiving laronidase despite the absence of a governmental policy regulating access to the drug. Epidemiological and treatment data concerning MPS I (...) are scarce. This study aims to present a demographic profile of Brazilian patients with MPS I, describe the routes of access to laronidase in Brazil, and discuss associated ethical issues relating to public funding of orphan drugs. Association of daily and time-segmented physical activity and sedentary behaviour with mental health of school children and adolescents from rural Northeastern Ontario, Canada.Bruno G. G. da Costa,Brenda Bruner,Graydon H. Raymer,Sara M. Scharoun Benson,Jean-Philippe Chaput,Tara McGoey,Greg Rickwood,Jennifer Robertson-Wilson,Travis J. Saunders &Barbi Law -2022 -Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Physical activity and sedentary behaviour have been linked to the mental health of children and adolescents, yet the timing of behaviours may play a role in this relationship and clarifying this could inform interventions. We explored cross-sectional associations of PA and SED in varying time segments throughout the school day with the mental health of school-aged children and adolescents from rural Northeastern Ontario, Canada. A total of 161 students wore accelerometers for 8 days and completed a self-report survey. Mental health (...) was measured using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Accelerometer-measured SED, light PA, and moderate and vigorous PA were estimated in the time-segments before school, school time, after school, and evenings. Associations were tested with multilevel linear regressions while adjusting for confounding factors. Students spent 72.6 min in MVPA, 209.0 min in LPA, and 621.0 min in SED per day. Daily SED was associated with less conduct problems. Evening LPA was inversely associated with hyperactivity, while SED was associated with hyperactivity and with peer problems before school, and during school. No associations were observed for MVPA, emotional symptoms, or prosocial behaviour. In conclusion, displacing SED with LPA in some specific periods of the day may benefit the mental health of students; taking this into account could strengthen interventions. (shrink)

Realismo moral nos Principia Ethica de G. E. Moore.Jaqueline Stefani &Wallace daSilva Carvalho -2025 -Filosofia Unisinos 26 (1):1-14.
(shrink)

An epistemological framework to appreciate the limits of predatory publishing.Konstantinos G. Papageorgiou,Jaime A. Teixeira daSilva &Demetrios E. Lekkas -2022 -Science and Philosophy 10 (1):7-19.
The concept of “predatory” publishing, despite many studies of the phenomenon, continues to be unclear. This paper visualizes this topic through an epistemological perspective, claiming that these limitations emerge from an impressionism of idealization, the entrapment of cause and effect induced by a journalology-based perspective, and entrenched fantasized extraction, imagination and divination of what constitutes the truth, in essence, a path never followed by an _epistēmōn_. Reality, proof, verification, recorded observations and their interpretations have been pivoted to fit the theoretical (...) flavor of the day, an entity one day being predatory, the next not. Perhaps ephemeral judgements of predatory have been built on boundless disregard for common sense. Yet, these have led to scientists’ apotheosis, almost oblivious of the intangibility of “valid”, or the infinitesimal continuum of “predatory”. Perhaps their fault-ridden authoritarian argumentative disabilities is at fault. (shrink)

The Holistic Claims of the Biopsychosocial Conception of WHO's International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF): A Conceptual Analysis on the Basis of a Pluralistic-Holistic Ontology and Multidimensional View of the Human being.H. M. Solli &A. Barbosa daSilva -2012 -Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 37 (3):277-294.
The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), designed by the WHO, attempts to provide a holistic model of functioning and disability by integrating a medical model with a social one. The aim of this article is to analyze the ICF’s claim to holism. The following components of the ICF’s complexity are analyzed: (1) health condition, (2) body functions and structures, (3) activity, (4) participation, (5) environmental factors, (6) personal factors, and (7) health. Although the ICF claims to be (...) holistic, it presupposes a monistic materialistic ontology. We indicate some limitations of this ontology, proposing instead: (a) a pluralistic–holistic ontology (PHO) and (b) a multidimensional view of the human being, with individual and environmental aspects, in relation to three levels of reality implied by the PHO. For the ICF to attain its holistic claim, the interactions between its components should be based on (a) and (b). (shrink)

  15. The reverse of Socrates: Xanthippe and the place of women in the history of Philosophy.Rafael Guimarães Tavares daSilva &Sara Camila Barbosa dos Anjos -2024 -ARGUMENTOS - Revista de Filosofia 16 (32):101-113.
In the history of Philosophy, Socrates is represented as an individual with a firm and temperate character, although intellectually restless, whose investigations inaugurate reflections of a properly ethical nature within the scope of ancient thought. Its historical position is considered so central that he is chosen as the term for the periodization of Ancient Philosophy (with its philosophers currently organized around the curious notion of “pre-Socratics”). His wife, Xanthippe, on the other hand, is represented by ancient biographical tradition as ill-tempered, (...) willful, and intemperate. In several anecdotes, she embodies the opposite of everything expected of a philosopher. In order to reflect on some constructions based on gender aspects within the history of Philosophy, we will analyze the metonymic value that representations of Socrates, Xanthippe and other female figures from his surroundings acquire in philosophical works, especially those composed by Plato. (Dis)Entangling Darwin: Cross-Disciplinary Reflections on the Man and His Legacy.Sara Graça daSilva,Fátima Vieira &Jorge Miguel Bastos daSilva (eds.) -2012 - Cambridge Scholars Press.
Charles Darwin's curiosity had a remarkable childlike enthusiasm driven by an almost compulsive appetite for a constant process of discovery, which he never satiated despite his many voyages. He would puzzle about the smallest things, from the wonders of barnacles to the different shapes, colours and textures of the beetles which he obsessively collected, from flowers and stems to birds, music and language, and would dedicate years to understanding the potential significance of everything he saw. Darwin's findings and theories relied (...) heavily on that same curiosity, on seeking and answering questions, however long these would take to clarify. His son Francis Darwin often recalls how "he would ask himself 'now what do you want to say' and his answer written down would often disentangle the confusion". In fact, "disentangling confusions" seems to have been the driving force behind Darwin's scientific pursuits, as he was struck with bewilderment when contemplating the luxuriousness of life. It was also the impetus for this book. The true implications of Darwin's legacy remain as controversial to the critics of our time as they were to his contemporaries. Darwin's impact within and beyond the biological sciences is both daunting and exhilarating, and attests to the need for an interdisciplinary approach by remaining a challenge to many scholars in the most diverse fields. The recent revival of his theories has opened a Pandora's box of different theoretical studies that are particularly receptive to exploring new and exciting angles of research. (shrink)

Scientific Culture and Mineralogical Sciences in the Luso-Brazilian Empire: The Work of João daSilva Feijó (1760–1824) in Ceará. [REVIEW]Maria Margaret Lopes,Clarete Paranhos daSilva,Silvia Fernanda de M. Figueirôa &Rachel Pinheiro -2005 -Science in Context 18 (2):201-224.
This paper argues that eighteenth-century Portuguese scientific policies promoted the inclusion of its main colony, Brazil, in the Enlightenment environment. This was accomplished by innovative initiatives, such as voyages to explore the colonial territory. Natural history activities, especially in mining, remained at the center of this political project and relied on co-opting groups of Portuguese in America. Based on the life of João daSilva Feijó, this article outlines the relevant connections between Feijó's scientific activities and the first Brazilian (...) national expedition in the 1850s, which led to discussion about developing the Brazilian nation. This analysis is aimed toward the growing consensus in historiography of the sciences that scientific activities practiced outside European centers gave rise to complex interactions involving the processes of mondialization of sciences and the construction of a local scientific context. The Politics of Emotional Shockwaves.Sara Falcato, Ana, Graça daSilva (ed.) -2021 - Palgrave Macmillan.
This interdisciplinary volume brings together specialists from different backgrounds to deliver expert views on the relationship between morality and emotion, putting a special emphasis on issues related to emotional shocks. One of the distinctive aspects of social existence today is our subjection to traumatic events on a global scale, and our subsequent embodiment of the emotional responses these events provoke. Covering various methodological angles, the contributors ensure careful and heterogeneous reflection on this delicate topic. With eleven original essays, the collection (...) spans a wide variety of fields from philosophy and literary theory, to the visual arts, history, and psychology. The authors cover diverse themes, including philosophical approaches to political polarization; the impact of negative emotions such as anger on inter-relational balance; humour and politics; media and the idea of progress; photography and trauma discourse; democratic morality in modern Indian society; emotional olfactory experiences; phenomenological readings of spatial disorientation, and the significance of moral shocks. This timely volume offers crucial perspectives on contemporary questions relating to ethical behaviours, and the challenges of a globalized society on the verge of political, financial and emotional collapse. Young People Who Meaningfully Improve Are More Likely to Mutually Agree to End Treatment.Julian Edbrooke-Childs,Luís Costa daSilva,Anja Čuš,Shaun Liverpool,Catarina Pinheiro Mota,Giada Pietrabissa,Thomas Bardsley,Celia M. D. Sales,Randi Ulberg,Jenna Jacob &Nuno Ferreira -2021 -Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Objective: Symptom improvement is often examined as an indicator of a good outcome of accessing mental health services. However, there is little evidence of whether symptom improvement is associated with other indicators of a good outcome, such as a mutual agreement to end treatment. The aim of this study was to examine whether young people accessing mental health services who meaningfully improved were more likely to mutually agree to end treatment. Methods: Multilevel multinomial regression analysis controlling for age, gender, ethnicity, and (...) referral source was conducted on N = 8,995 episodes of care [Female = 5,469, 61%; meanAge = 13.66 years] using anonymised administrative data from young people's mental health services. Results: Compared to young people with no change in mental health difficulties, those showing positive meaningful changes in mental health difficulties were less likely to have case closure due to non-mutual agreement. Similarly, they were less likely to transfer or end treatment for other reasons than by case closure due to mutual agreement. Conclusion: The findings suggest that young people accessing mental health services whose symptoms meaningfully improve are more likely to mutually agree to end treatment, adding to the evidence that symptom improvement may be appropriate to examine as an indicator of a good outcome of accessing mental health services. On uniformly continuous functions between pseudometric spaces and the Axiom of Countable Choice.Samuel G. daSilva -2019 -Archive for Mathematical Logic 58 (3-4):353-358.
In this note we show that the Axiom of Countable Choice is equivalent to two statements from the theory of pseudometric spaces: the first of them is a well-known characterization of uniform continuity for functions between metric spaces, and the second declares that sequentially compact pseudometric spaces are \—meaning that all real valued, continuous functions defined on these spaces are necessarily uniformly continuous.

Efforts on Changing Lifestyle Behaviors May Not Be Enough to Improve Health-Related Quality of Life Among Adolescents: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.Alexsandra daSilva Bandeira,Michael W. Beets,Pablo Magno da Silveira,Marcus Vinicius Veber Lopes,Valter Cordeiro Barbosa Filho,Bruno G. G. da Costa &Kelly SamaraSilva -2021 -Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Schools have been the main context for physical activity and sedentary behavior interventions among adolescents, but there is inconsistent evidence on whether they also improve dimensions of the health−related quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a school-based active lifestyle intervention on dimensions of HRQoL. A secondary aim was to verify whether sex, age, and HRQoL at baseline were moderators of the intervention effect. A cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted at three control and (...) three intervention schools in Florianopolis, Brazil. All students from 7th to 9th grade were invited to participate. A school year intervention, designed primarily to increase PA and reduce SB, included strategies focused on teacher training on PA, SB, and nutrition, and availability of teaching materials related to these contents; environmental improvements ; and education strategies, with the availability of folders and posters regarding PA, SB, and nutrition. Participants and the research staffs were not blinded to group assignment, but a standardized evaluation protocol was applied at baseline and after the intervention using the KIDSCREEN−27 to assess HRQoL across five dimensions. Mixed linear models were performed to evaluate the effect of the Movimente intervention on the five HRQoL dimensions. Of the 921 students who answered the questionnaire at baseline, 300 and 434 completed the study in control and intervention groups, respectively. The results revealed no significant effects of the intervention on any HRQoL dimensions. A reduction of the school environment dimension was observed in both the control and intervention groups. Sensitivity analyses showed that students in the highest baseline tertiles of HRQoL in any dimension had a reduction in their respective scores from pre- to post-intervention in both school groups. In conclusion, our results demonstrated no intervention effect on HRQoL dimensions and those students with the highest levels of HRQoL at baseline on all dimensions reduced from pre to post-intervention.Clinical Trial RegistrationThe trial is registered at the Clinical Trial Registry. (shrink)

    Path of fear: Experiences of health professionals in the fight against COVID‐19.Flávia Regina S. Ramos,Denise Maria Guerreiro V. daSilva,Kássia Janara V. Lima,Wagner Ferreira Monteiro,Jaqueline de A. G. Sachett,Wuelton Monteiro,Darlisom Sousa Ferreira,Lucas Lorran C. de Andrade &Igor Castro Tavares -2023 -Nursing Inquiry 30 (4):e12578.
This study aimed to understand the expressions of fear in the journeys of health professionals who worked in the confrontation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19), in the city of Manaus, in the Brazilian Western Amazon. This is an exploratory qualitative study that adopts interpretive description as a method to generate informed knowledge responsive to the needs of the practice. We included 56 participants, comprising 23 health managers and 33 health workers (middle and higher level) of different professional categories. The results (...) revealed three circles of experience: (1) knowledge and professional experience in dealing with the disease (unknown–known–experienced); (2) the growing proximity to death and loss (predicted–witnessed–suffered); and (3) the involvement and proximity to whatever affects the individual, their emotions, and personal transformations in the face of the threat (the collective, the neighbor, and oneself). Our results suggest that health professionals who worked during the COVID‐19 pandemic in Manaus experienced insecurity, dread, and fear, illustrating the complexity of developing their activities in the front line of care and management during the different phases of the pandemic. A contribution of the study is precisely that of capturing this complexity, which suggests the impossibility of analyzing fear only in its simple manifestation, or in each circle of experience.

This text reports experiences of a decolonial Mathematics Education practice in a municipal public school in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, that resulted in the elaboration of this ongoing master's project. More specifically, it discusses the tensions between an official curriculum and school practices. The experiences occurred with the production of school gardens, executed from the knowledge of agroecology and agroforestry. Among the objectives of this work, we seek to highlight the collective construction of a project, carried out with (...) families, the community, research groups, students, and school staff, which occurred from meetings and discussions about the theories, practices, and public policies necessary for the construction of the garden. Thus, we highlighted some mathematical knowledge of the decolonial Afroindigenous curriculum, based on the cultivation practices of the Guarani M'bya calendar. With this, we discuss the possibilities of school pedagogical practices, in which the indigenous cosmology is inserted into the Basic Education curriculum. (shrink)

The Opportunity Gap: Achievement and Inequality in Education.Carol DeShano daSilva,James Philip Huguley,Zenub Kakli &Radhika Rao (eds.) -2007 - Harvard Educational Review.
_The Opportunity Gap_ aims to shift attention from the current overwhelming emphasis on schools in discussions of the achievement gap to more fundamental questions about social and educational opportunity. The achievement gap looms large in the current era of high-stakes testing and accountability. Yet questions persist: Has the accountability movement—and attendant discussions on the achievement gap—focused attention on the true sources of educational failure in American schools? Do we need to look beyond classrooms and schools for credible accounts of disparities (...) in educational outcomes? The essays in this book reintroduce the overlooked central issue in educational inequity: the lack of opportunity that many social groups face in our common quest for educational attainment. In a series of wide-ranging and carefully nuanced essays, _The Opportunity Gap_ casts much-needed light on the vexed relationship between society and education—and on the crucial, persistent role that education plays in addressing social ills.

/// This article examines the situation of NMRs. Taking as example the development of NMRs in Africa, the author considers the contribution of various theoretical models, specifically deprivation, revitalisation and brainwashing theories. Particular attention is given to the question whether or not these models are culture specific and/or to whether or not they are applicable to the present development of NMRs. (shrink)
