An Assessment ofResearch-Doctorate Programs in the United States: Biological Sciences.Lyle V. Jones,Gardner Lindzey,Porter E. Coggeshall &Conference Board of the AssociatedResearch Councils -1982 - National Academies Press.
The quality of doctoral-level biochemistry (N=139), botany (N=83), cellular/molecular biology (N=89), microbiology (N=134), physiology (N=101), and zoology (N=70) programs at United States universities was assessed, using 16 measures. These measures focused on variables related to: (1) program size; (2) characteristics of graduates; (3) reputational factors (scholarly quality of faculty, effectiveness of programs in educatingresearch scholars/scientists, improvement in program quality during the last 5 years); (4) university library size; (5)research support; and (6) publication records. Chapter I discusses (...) prior attempts to assess quality in graduate education, development of the study plans, and the selection of disciplines and programs to be evaluated. Chapter II discusses the methodology used, focusing on each of the assessment measures. Chapters III to VIII present, respectively, findings from the analyses of the biochemistry, botany, cellular/molecular biology, microbiology, physiology, and zoology programs. Chapter IX includes a summary of results, correlations among measures, several additional analyses, and suggestions for future studies. Among the findings reported are those indicating that cellular/molecular biology programs had, on the average, the largest number of faculty and that students in cellular/molecular biology, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, and physiology received a relatively high fraction of financial support. (Survey instruments and supporting documentation are included in appendices.) (JN). (shrink)

Research Doctorate Programs in the United States: Continuity and Change.Marvin L. Goldberger,Brendan A. Maher,Pamela Ebert Flattau,Committee for the Study ofResearch-Doctorate Programs in the United States &Conference Board of AssociatedResearch Councils -1995 - National Academies Press.
Doctoral programs at U.S. universities play a critical role in the development of human resources both in the United States and abroad. This volume reports the results of an extensive study of U.S.research-doctorate programs in five broad fields: physical sciences and mathematics, engineering, social and behavioral sciences, biological sciences, and the humanities.Research-Doctorate Programs in the United States documents changes that have taken place in the size, structure, and quality of doctoral education since the widely used 1982 (...) editions. This update provides selected information on nearly 4,000 doctoral programs in 41 subdisciplines at 274 doctorate-granting institutions. This volume also reports the results of the National Survey of Graduate Faculty, which polled a sample of faculty for their views on the scholarly quality of program faculty and the effectiveness of doctoral programs in preparingresearch scholars/scientists. This much-anticipated update of such an essential reference will be useful to education administrators, university faculty, and students seeking authoritative information on doctoral programs. The Theoretical Unity of Aristotle’s Categorical Syllogistic and Sophistics.Gonzalo Llach Independent Researcher -forthcoming -History and Philosophy of Logic:1-18.
The hypothesis of a theoretical unity between On Sophistical Refutations and Prior Analytics presents a major challenge to scholars attempting to unify the criteria of analysis. This paper examines this problem and proposes a middle ground between the perspectives of Woods and Boger to address this crucial question: If a unitary and coherent theory of deduction exists, why does not the technical apparatus of syllogistic modes for analyzing fallacies appear in SE? This paper makes useful contributions to the discussion on (...) the internal unity of Aristotle's logical writings on around categorical syllogistics and the doctrine of sophistical refutations. Using data on submitted and published manuscripts in Feminist Economics from 1995 to 2019, we examine differences in method and scope used by authors residing in the Global North and Global South. We specifically focus onresearch methods, intersectional analyses, region of analysis, and co-authorship status. Further, using logistic regression models, we examine the relationship between authors’ location and use ofresearch methods. We find authors in the Global South are more likely to engage in empirical and mixed-methods (...) papers compared to Global North authors in our sample. Moreover, a greater share of Global South authors engage in intersectional analysis and exhibit geographical focus on developing countries. Drawing insights from the Feminist Economics manuscripts data, we argue that encouraging Global Southresearch can contribute to the goals of the field of feminist economics – aimed at inclusivity, diversity of standpoints, and plurality inresearch methods, thereby improving overall economicresearch. Trustedresearch environments are definitely about trust.Paul Affleck,Jenny Westaway,Maurice Smith &Geoff Schrecker -2023 -Journal of Medical Ethics 49 (9):656-657.
In their highly topical paper, Grahamet alargued that TrustedResearch Environments (TREs) are not actually about trust because they reduce or remove ‘…the need for trust in the use and sharing of patient health data’. We believe this is fundamentally mistaken. TREs mitigate or remove some risks, but they do not address all public concerns. In this regard, TREs provide evidence for people to decide whether the bodies holding and using their data can be trusted. TREs may make it (...) easier for people to trust but there is still a need for that trust. (shrink)

Integratingresearch and development: the emergence of rational drug design in the pharmaceutical industry.Matthias Adam -2005 -Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part C: Studies in History and Philosophy of Biological and Biomedical Sciences 36 (3):513-537.
Rational drug design is a method for developing new pharmaceuticals that typically involves the elucidation of fundamental physiological mechanisms. It thus combines the quest for a scientific understanding of natural phenomena with the design of useful technology and hence integrates epistemic and practical aims ofresearch and development. Case studies of the rational design of the cardiovascular drugs propranolol, captopril and losartan provide insights into characteristics and conditions of this integration. Rational drug design became possible in the 1950s when (...) theoretical knowledge of drug-target interaction and experimental drug testing could interlock in cycles of mutual advancement. The integration does not, however, diminish the importance of basicresearch for pharmaceutical development. Rather, it can be shown that still in the 1990s, linear processes of innovation and the close combination of practical and epistemic work were interdependent. (shrink)

HealthResearch Ethics Committees in South Africa 12 years into democracy.Myer Landon &Moodley Keymanthri -2007 -BMC Medical Ethics 8 (1):1-8.
Background Despite the growth of biomedicalresearch in South Africa, there are few insights into the operation ofResearch Ethics Committees (RECs) in this setting. We investigated the composition, operations and training needs of health RECs in South Africa against the backdrop of national and international guidelines. Methods The 12 major health RECs in South Africa were surveyed using semi-structured questionnaires that investigated the composition and functions of each REC as well as the operational issues facing committees. Results (...) Health RECs in SA have an average of 16 members and REC members are predominantly male and white. Overall, there was a large discrepancy in findings between under-resourced RECs and well resourced RECs. The majority of members (56%) are scientists or clinicians who are typically affiliated to the same institution as the health REC. Community representatives account for only 8% of membership. Training needs for health REC members varied widely. Conclusion Most major health RECs in South Africa are well organized given the resource constraints that exist in relation toresearch ethics in developing countries. However, the gender, racial and occupational diversity of most of these RECs is suboptimal, and most RECs are not constituted in accordance with South African guidelines. Variability in the operations and training needs of RECs is a reflection of apartheid-entrenched influences in tertiary education in SA. While legislation now exists to enforce standardization ofresearch ethics review systems, no provision has been made for resources or capacity development, especially to support historically-disadvantaged institutions. Perpetuation of this legacy of apartheid represents a violation of the principles of justice and equity. (shrink)

Ethical Oversight of Multinational CollaborativeResearch: Lessons from Africa for Building Capacity and for Policy.Jeremy Sugarman &Participants in the Partnership for Enhancing HumanResearch Protections Durban Workshop1 -2007 -Research Ethics 3 (3):84-86.
Researchers and others involved in theresearch enterprise from 12 African countries met with those working in ethics and oversight in the United States as part of an effort to developresearch ethics capacity. Drawing on a wealth of experience among participants, discussions at the meeting revealed five categories of issues that warrant careful attention by those engaged in similar efforts as well as international policymakers and those charged with oversight ofresearch. (1) Principal investigators should build (...) ‘trueresearch teams’ where members of the team are meaningfully involved in decisions regarding the protocol and its implementation. (2)There should be explicit discussion about the ‘standard of care’ at the outset of project planning that includes clarification of the terminology that is being used. (3) While internationally collaborativeresearch may involve populations that have inherent vulnerabilities, it is important to recognize the limitations of host country solutions (such as elaborated consent processes) and look for means to negotiate appropriate protections for those willing to participate. (4) In conductingresearch involving biological materials it would be prudent to develop material transfer agreements at the outset of the study to clarify expectations and to minimize the likelihood of harm. (5) Those engaged in internationally collaborativeresearch need to be alert to the potential conflicts of interests of host country ethics committees during the approval process and to take measures to manage them if they indeed exist. Different researchers from psychology and neuroscience state that navigation involves the manipulation of cognitive maps and graphs. In this paper, I will argue that navigating – specifically, journey planning – can be conceived as a process of practical reasoning. First, I will argue that journey planning constitutes a case of means-end reasoning involving inferences with cartographic representations. Then, I will argue that the output of journey planning functions as an instrumental belief in means-end reasoning. More specifically, journey planning can deliver (...) an instrumental rule that plays a normative role in spatial cognition. This approach motivates a pluralist conception of practical reasoning, stating that inferences might run through different representational formats and processes. (shrink)

Research Ethics Review: Social Care and Social ScienceResearch and the Mental Capacity Act 2005.Jonathan Parker,Bridget Penhale &David Stanley -2011 -Ethics and Social Welfare 5 (4):380-400.
This paper considers concerns that social careresearch may be stifled by health-focused ethical scrutiny under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the requirement for an ?appropriate body? to determine ethical approval forresearch involving people who are deemed to lack capacity under the Act to make decisions concerning their participation and consent inresearch. The current study comprised an online survey of current practice in universityresearch ethics committees (URECs), and explored through semi-structured interviews the (...) views of social researchers engaged in or exploring work concerning people who may, under the Act, lack the capacity to make decisions to consent to participate in aresearch programme. The paper concludes that there was a lack of overt knowledge of and reference to the implications of the Act forresearch and some concerns that a restrictive focus on health-related scrutiny might prevent social careresearch from taking place. There was also a degree of creativity shown by social care researchers in responding to changing demands and a wish to assist people in making decisions to participate where possible. (shrink)

Medicalresearch is still in its infancy. Within the memory of many of us, medical knowledge has made more progress than had been achieved in all the preceding time since the beginning of history. We have witnessed the reduction of our death rate, the extension of our life span and the achievement of a general state of health hitherto unknown.

The question we have been investigating is whether the nonlocality of standard quantum mechanics is the private domain of Nature, as is generally assumed by the physics community, or whether in special circumstances the nonlocal connection between subsystems can be used to send signals from one observer to another. With the aid of generous private contributions and some use of CENPA resources, we have continued the work on this test of nonlocal quantum communication, which has been reported in the past (...) three years123. The initial configuration of the experiment, as described in the first two references, employed a high power argon-ion laser operating at about 1 W in the ultraviolet at 351 nm that pumped nonlinear crystals (BBO or LiIO3) to produce pairs of momentum-entangled 702 nm photons, on which measurements were subsequently performed. It was concluded that signal-to-noise limitations from fluoresence photons competing with the down-converted photons prevented the planned measurements using the initial configuration. (shrink)

Systematic KnowledgeResearch. Rethinking Epistemology.Günter Abel -2014 -Rivista Internazionale di Filosofia e Psicologia 5 (1):13-28.
Systematic KnowledgeResearch is the approach used to describe the peculiar profiles of various forms of knowledge. It investigates the points of overlap between the various kinds of knowledge forms, and it elucidates the mechanisms of interpenetration between those forms. Systematic KnowledgeResearch grasps the dynamic of various forms of knowledge and their interplay, and describes the practices and the manifestations of knowledge. KnowledgeResearch provides analyses and suggestions for modeling each of the five fields as well (...) as their interconnections. These objectives make a difference between Systematic KnowledgeResearch on the one hand, and traditional theory of knowledge and varieties of science studies on the other. KnowledgeResearch meets the current desideratum to systematically broaden and revise the house of epistemology. (shrink)

ApplyingResearch Findings to Enhance Pre-Practicum Ethics Training.Alfred Allan -2018 -Ethics and Behavior 28 (6):465-482.
Professions have a social obligation to ensure that their members’ professional behavior is morally appropriate. The psychology profession in most jurisdictions delegates the responsibility of ensuring that psychologists entering the profession are ethically competent to pre-practicum training programs. Educators responsible for teaching the ethics courses in these programs often base them on Rest’s (1984, 1994) theory that does not take into account a vast amount of contemporary psychological and neuroscientificresearch data on moral decision making. My aim with this (...) article is therefore to summarize the psychological and neuroscienceresearch findings relevant to moral decision making and consider how educators who teach ethics courses can apply them in developing ethics courses grounded inresearch.
