Garland of Flowers for a Great Iranist.ProdsOktor Skjaervø -2021 -Journal of the American Oriental Society 133 (2).detailsThis is a review article of the second Festschrift for Iranist Philippe Gignoux. The contributions, which have generally been inspired by Gignoux’ own writings, are outlined and in many cases supplemented by the reviewer’s comments. Appendi- ces discuss the ritual phrase ēwēn mahr and the title Ohrmazd mowbed.

Apostasy and Repentance in Early Medieval Zoroastrianism.Yishai Kiel &ProdsOktor Sklaervø -2021 -Journal of the American Oriental Society 137 (2).detailsThe Middle Persian literature from the early Islamic centuries frequently deals with practical theological issues faced by the Zoroastrian communities under foreign domination. Here, we present a number of questions regarding a Zoroastrian’s conversion to Islam and his subsequent repentance and desire to return to Zoroastrianism and answers given by ninth- and tenth-century Zoroastrian priestly authorities. It is shown how the priests cite ancient traditions found in the Pahlavi versions of Avestan texts to justify their answers, and then apply them (...) to the contemporary social reality. (shrink)

Trautmann &Teije de Jong -2013 -Journal of the American Oriental Society 133 (2):295.detailsThis article examines the historical representation of the Jinshin Rebellion as a foundational event in the Nihon shoki and other eighth-century Japanese texts. Focusing on the differences between two alternative stories of Tenmu’s departure from the Ōmi capital to Yoshino, I argue that the Nihon shoki contains traces of several competing historical narratives that are the expression of a historical process: the political struggles over the historical record and the representation of Tenmu’s legitimacy in the early eighth century when the (...) A $ \prod _{2}^{0}$ SINGLETON OF MINIMAL ARITHMETIC DEGREE.Peter M. Gerdes -forthcoming -Journal of Symbolic Logic:1-33.detailsIn the study of the arithmetic degrees the $\omega \text {-REA}$ sets play a role analogous to the role the r.e. degrees play in the study of the Turing degrees. However, much less is known about the arithmetic degrees and the role of the $\omega \text {-REA}$ sets in that structure than about the Turing degrees. Indeed, even basic questions such as the existence of an $\omega \text {-REA}$ set of minimal arithmetic degree are open. This paper makes progress on (...) this question by demonstrating that some promising approaches inspired by the analogy with the r.e. sets fail to show that no $\omega \text {-REA}$ set is arithmetically minimal. Finally, it constructs a $\prod ^0_{2}$ singleton of minimal arithmetic degree. Not only is this a result of considerable interest in its own right, constructions of $\prod ^0_{2}$ singletons often pave the way for constructions of $\omega \text {-REA}$ sets with similar properties. Along the way, a number of interesting results relating arithmetic reducibility and rates of growth are established. (shrink)
Variations on the Feferman-Vaught theorem, with applications to $$\prodp \mathbb {F}p$$.Alice Medvedev &Alexander Van Abel -forthcoming -Archive for Mathematical Logic:1-18.detailsUsing the Feferman-Vaught Theorem, we prove that a definable subset of a product structure must be a Boolean combination of open sets, in the product topology induced by giving each factor structure the discrete topology. We prove that for families of structures with certain properties, including families of integral domains, the pure Boolean generalized product is definable in the direct product structure. We use these results to obtain characterizations of the definable subsets of $$\prod _p \mathbb {F}_p$$—in particular, every formula (...) is equivalent to a Boolean combination of $$\exists \forall \exists $$ formulae. Addressing the Practical and Ethical Issues of Nudging in Environmental Policy.Janne I. Hukkinen -2016 -Environmental Values 25 (3):329-351.detailsNudging refers to the subtle design of the context of choice in a way that mobilises the unconscious mind and alters human behaviour predictably. Nudging has been criticised for entailing numerous practical and ethical problems, including manipulation, elitism and cultural insensitivity. To respond to the problems, participatory and deliberative procedures have been proposed that would enable the questioning of the power relations embedded in behavioural governance. Yet participation and deliberation are themselves characterised by unconscious behavioural influences. I argue that awareness (...) of the prevalence of unconscious behavioural influences in environmental governance is a prerequisite for tackling the complex practical and ethical issues of nudging. I show that unconscious behavioural influences permeate environmental governance and outline analytical approaches for revealing them. (shrink)
Right/wrong: how technology transforms our ethics.Juan Enriquez -2020 - Cambridge, Massachusetts: The MIT Press.detailsWhat if what is permissible and acceptable today is anathema tomorrow? There is a whole canon of scholarly ethics books written with the express purpose of telling you what is RIGHT and what is WRONG. This is not one such book. Juan Enriquez wants to make it easier for us to talk to one another, to prod one another, to understand and guide one another without an everlasting certainty of strict RIGHT v WRONG.
