Thermodynamics and magnetism in U 1-x Th x Be 13-y B y.R. H. Heffner,W. P. Beyermann,M. F. Hundley,J. D. Thompson,J. L. Smith,Z. Fisk,K. Bedell,P.Birrer,C. Baines,F. N. Gygax,B. Hitti,E. Lippelt,H. R. Ott,A. Schenck &D. E. MacLaughlin -unknowndetailsWe report specific heat and μSR measurements on Th and/or B substituted UBe13. The specific heat data show that either Th or B substitution reduces the Kondo temperature TK and increases the entropy at the superconducting transition by almost 20%, indicating an enhanced density of states. However, whereas μSR shows clear evidence for magnetic correlations for Th substitutions, no magnetism is observed for B substitutions. The enhanced specific heat jump in the B-substituted material is associated with a change in the (...) superconducting properties as TK is reduced. (shrink)

Downward Causation.P. B. Andersen,Claus Emmeche,N. O. Finnemann &P. V. Christiansen (eds.) -2000 - Aarhus, Denmark: University of Aarhus Press.detailsThe book deals with the notion of Downward Causation from a wide array of perspectives, including physics, biology, psychology, social science, communication studies, text theory, and philosophy. The book includes proponents as well as opponents discussing the validity of the notion.
Children’s consent and the zone of parental discretion.P. Alderson -2017 -Clinical Ethics 12 (2):55-62.detailsThis paper briefly reviews highlights from decades of debates in medicine, law, bioethics, psychology and social research about children’s and parents’ views and consent to medical treatment and research. There appears to have been a rise and later a fall in respect for children’s views, illustrated among many examples by a recent book on the zone of parental discretion, which is reviewed. A return to greater respect for children’s views and consent is advocated.
Christian Mysticism: A Study in Walter Hilton's The Ladder of Perfection: H. P. OWEN.H. P. Owen -1971 -Religious Studies 7 (1):31-42.detailsMany writers often generalise about mysticism without a sufficiently close analysis of texts. Consequently the generalisations are often invalid. My present aim is to analyse one text and, in the light of this analysis, to offer some observations concerning mysticism in general and Christian mysticism in particular.
Commentary on the "Family Rule".P. Alderson -1999 -Journal of Medical Ethics 25 (6):497-498.detailsThe “family rule” paper by Dr Foreman proposes a way of resolving the present uncertainty about medical law on children's consent and refusal. This commentary reviews how doctors' decisions are already well protected by English law and respected by the courts. The “family rule” appears to be likely only to complicate the already diffuse law on parental consent, and to weaken further the competent minor's position in cases of uncertainty and disagreement. It leaves the difficult questions about defining and assessing (...) children's competence unanswered. This commentary suggests that these questions would be better resolved through professionally determined standards of good practice that respect children and parents, rather than through rules or laws. Druids, patriarchs, and the primordial religion.P. C. Almond -2000 -Journal of Contemporary Religion 15 (3):379-394.detailsIn the light of the contemporary resurgence of Druidism, this article explores the heyday of the invention of Druidism in the West during the Romantic period. It demonstrates the way in which the construction of Druidism, as the heir of the Patriarchal tradition of the Old Testament and of Primordial religion, played a significant role in the construction of British self-identity from 1750-1850, in contrast to the marginal role which neo-Druidism plays in contemporary British self-understanding. The article explores the perceived (...) connection between Druidism and the great stone circles of Stonehenge and Avebury. (shrink)

The Commentary on Aristotle’sDe anima by Alphonsus Vargas Toletanus, OESA.P. J. J. M. Bakker &J. H. L. van den Bercken -2010 -Bulletin de Philosophie Medievale 52:201-234.detailsThis article examines the commentary on Aristotle’s De anima by Alphonsus Vargas Toletanus, OESA († 1366). The commentary has been preserved in one manuscript, Cremona, Biblioteca Statale, Ms. 113 (Nl-12193), written in Bologna in 1475, and in at least five editions printed between 1477 and 1609. The article presents a detailed overview of the commentary by listing its quaestiones and conclusiones and by focusing on the sources used by Vargas. It argues that the general objective of the work was to (...) provide an overview of opinions on essential issues concerning the soul, to be used by students of the Augustinian Order. (shrink)
