The immigration discrimination dilemma.Mollie Gerver,Miranda Simon,Patrick Lown &Dominik Duell -2024 -Ethics and Global Politics 17 (2):27-50.detailsThis article presents moral dilemmas that arise when expressing an argument persuades citizens to support rights for migrants, but also persuades citizens to support rights for some migrants and not others. We draw upon an original survey experiment to illustrate versions of these dilemmas.
Musical practice as a ritual of resistance in (post)-migratory situation.Mark Simon -2017 -Sociology of Power 29 (2):133-152.detailsThe article is dedicated to Afro-Caribbean musical rituals as a form of response to exclusion from public sphere. The author claims that there are two key features of black music (in all the diversity of its genres): a) participatory character; b) dualism, manifested in a combination of a cheerful form and tragic content, hidden from an external observer. Starting from this thesis, the author places Notting Hill Carnival as a key chronotope of the (post)migratory situation in the center of his (...) analysis. West Indian immigrants found themselves in this very situation in post-war Britain. The evolution of the Afro-Caribbean immigrants' carnival culture is considered in three stages. Firstly, the article discusses participation of the African slaves' descendants in the Trinidad street carnival. Then it proceeds to the transposition of this tradition into the context of the UK's capital. Further, the use of carnival forms of protest against racism in modern Britain is discussed. On the one hand, the study reveals a trend towards significant expansion of the "black music" adherents circle due to its subversive potential. On the other hand, it discovers the limits of solidarity among those who are prone to social stigmatization due to their ethnocultural otherness. (shrink)

Causation, Liability and Toxic Risk Exposure.Michael Arthur Simon -1992 -Journal of Applied Philosophy 9 (1):35-44.detailsABSTRACT Persons injured as a result of exposure to toxic or carcinogenic substances are seldom able to recover damages from those who are responsible for the exposure. Tort law requires proof of causation, and causation is often unprovable because of long latency periods, because of the relative infrequency of the injuries and because many of the injuries among the exposed population are the result of other factors. A number of proposals for modifying the legal causation requirement to allow those who (...) create hazardous risks to be held liable for the injuries that materialise are considered and found inadequate. A proposal to treat risk exposure itself as an injury for which compensation under private law is possible is also considered and ultimately found incoherent. The paper concludes by arguing for a public law solution, modelled on criminal law, but providing compensation for victims. (shrink)
Small but powerful—local value chains and sustainability‐oriented approaches in the agri‐food sector.Susanne Royer &Maike Simon -2023 -Business and Society Review 128 (2):331-366.detailsRegional and local value creation is seen as one solution for reducing the environmental impact of the agri‐food system. The point of reference for this research is the powerless position of small actors in agri‐food chains. This paper gives insights into the motivation of small‐scale producers in developed countries to exit national and export markets and to opt for a sustainability orientation. Specifically, we explore how the powerlessness of small actors in global value chains may fuel the formation of regional (...) and local value chains. Through a regional case study, we map the dairy value system and identify three different value chain structures in the Northern German dairy industry. Then, we illustrate how some small (organic) raw milk producers have changed their position in the value chain and bargaining strength by following different upgrading strategies. Their increase in bargaining power comes with efficiency losses and increased risk. Implications for small‐scale producers and society are discussed and brought together in a framework that demonstrates the drivers and challenges for sustainability‐oriented small‐scale agricultural producers to achieve a stable and competitive position within the market. ABSTRACT This article is motivated by the debate about the presence of the ideas of Aristipo and the early Cyrenaics in Plato's work. The following question guides this article: is it possible to identify the epistemological idea presented in the first part of the Theaetetus, which is attributed to refined and famous men, as part of the Cyrenaic philosophy? In order to answer this question, I will use the concept of an imaginary or fictitious controversial dialogue proposed by the Controversial Spaces model of Oscar Nudler. I will be working with the following exegetical hypothesis: notwithstanding the differences between the doctrine exposed in the Platonic dialogue and the doctrine present in the Cyrenaic philosophy, it can be maintained that this group of philosophers was the one most likely to have been on Plato's mind when he outlined the doctrine of the refined philosophers in the Theaetetus. In this regard, the presence of Cyrenaic philosophy in Plato's work could be thought of as a kind of vestige. (shrink)
(1 other version)Le «Catéchisme de lÉglise catholique».M.
