Hanging the coat on a collar: Same function but different localization and mechanism for COPII.Yehonathan Malis,KoretHirschberg &Christoph Kaether -2022 -Bioessays 44 (10):2200064.detailsAn entirely different mechanism and localization were recently proposed for the COPII coat complex, challenging its well‐accepted function to select and concentrate cargo into small COPII‐coated spherical transport vesicles. Instead, the COPII complex is suggested to form a dynamic yet stationary collar that forms a boundary between the ER and the ER export membrane domain. This membrane domain, the ER exit site (ERES), is the site of COPII‐mediated sorting and concentration of transport competent proteins. Subsequently, the ERES is implicated to (...) mature and bud to form a sizeable pleiomorphic transport carrier that translocate on microtubules to fuse with the Golgi apparatus. Despite this drastic mechanistic dogma shift, most of the underlying protein‐protein and protein‐membrane interactions remain unchanged. Here, we attempt to provide a detailed description of the newly proposed model of how ER to Golgi transport works by describing the role of several essential proteins of the transport machinery. Reflections on Language.StuartHirschberg &TerryHirschberg (eds.) -1998 - Oxford University Press USA.detailsReflections on Language brings together a collection of seventy-eight articles that examine language from many different perspectives. Its selections focus on language as a social form, demonstrating how it is an indispensable component of the world and how we interpret it. Organized thematically, the text addresses many topics, including the acquisition of language, the rhetoric of advertising, the language of politics, language between the sexes, and language across cultures. It also discusses areas not covered by similar books, such as the (...) bodily basis of language, communication across species, and the language of cyberspace. Ideal for courses in freshman composition, introduction to language, and a variety of writing classes, Reflections on Language helps students and other readers to become more aware of language and to use it more effectively. The text offers useful aids for writing instruction, including an opening chapter on writing and revising, a rhetorical table of contents, and a glossary, as well as introductory notes, journal writing prompts, and analytical exercises for each selection. Reflections on Language also includes an index as well as thirteen advertisements, eighteen cartoons, and numerous end-of-chapter writing assignments. This unique reader incorporates a substantial number of scholarly articles by language theorists in addition to pieces by popular writers and works of short fiction, poetry, and drama. Lively, informative, and authoritative, Reflections on Language leads students and general readers to a deeper understanding of language and its power. (shrink)

(shrink)

Having a disease or a disability? The meaning of traditional taxonomies and their application to complex syndromes. How Is Existential Threat Related to Intergroup Conflict? Introducing the Multidimensional Existential Threat (MET) Model.Gilad Hirschberger,Tsachi Ein-Dor,Bernhard Leidner &Tamar Saguy -2016 -Frontiers in Psychology 7:195205.detailsExistential threat lies at the heart of intergroup conflict, but the literature on existential concerns lacks clear conceptualization and integration. To address this problem, we offer a new conceptualization and measurement of existential threat. We establish the reliability and validity of our measure, and to illustrate its utility, we examine whether different existential threats underlie the association between political ideology and support for specific political policies. Study 1 (N = 798) established the construct validity of the scale, and revealed four (...) distinct existential threats: personal death, physical collective annihilation, symbolic collective annihilation, and past victimization. Study 2 (N = 424) confirmed the 4-factor structure, and the convergent and discriminant validity of the scale. Study 3 (N = 170) revealed that the association between a hawkish political ideology and support for hardline policies was mediated by past victimization, whereas the association between a dovish political ideology and conciliatory policies was mediated by concerns over collective symbolic annihilation. Study 4 (N = 503) conceptually replicated the pattern of findings found in Study 3, and showed that at times of conflict, physical collective annihilation concerns also mediate the relationship between hawkish ideologies and support for hardline policies. In both Studies 3 and 4, when controlling for other threats, personal death did not play a significant role. These results underscore the need to consider the multidimensional nature of existential threat, especially in the context of political conflict. (shrink)
Left out and vilified: Do the effects of political metaphors on spatial orientation judgments indicate a taboo effect?Heather Ashley Kumove,Gilad Hirschberger &Boaz M. Ben-David -forthcoming -Cognition and Emotion.detailsCan aversion from a political ideology lead to rapid, automatic rejection of said ideology? We tested this question in the Israeli political context using a spatial Stroop task to examine whether politically charged left-wing terms would elicit slower verbal latencies. In Study 1 (n = 85), participants were presented with left- and right-wing political terms presented either in a congruent or incongruent spatial location and were asked to verbally indicate only the location of the word. Study 2 (n = 128), (...) replicated this procedure with the Hebrew words for “left” and “right” and examined whether political awareness primes would amplify the effect. Results indicated a slowdown for left-wing related terms above and beyond a congruency effect that was exacerbated under political priming. The slowdown was particularly pronounced among centre-right-wing participants in Study 1, but significant across political orientations in Study 2. Two auxiliary studies rule out the possibility that phonemic features of the words, or spatial preferences could explain these effects. Overall, results support a taboo effect (i.e., implicit aversion) for left-wing political terms. (shrink)
