Effects of Music Training on the Auditory Working Memory of Chinese-Speaking School-Aged Children: A Longitudinal Intervention Study.Peixin Nie,Cuicui Wang,Guang Rong,Bin Du,Jing Lu,Shuting Li,Vesa Putkinen,Sha Tao &Mari Tervaniemi -2022 -Frontiers in Psychology 12.detailsMusic expertise is known to be beneficial for cognitive function and development. In this study, we conducted 1-year music training for school children in China. The children were assigned to music or second-language after-class training groups. A passive control group was included. We aimed to investigate whether music training could facilitate working memory development compared to second-language training and no training. Before and after the training, auditory WM was measured via a digit span task, together with the vocabulary and block (...) tests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Child IV. The results of the DS task revealed superior development in the music group compared to the other groups. However, further analysis of DS forward and backward tasks indicated that the performance of the three training/non-training groups only differed significantly in DS backward scores, but not in the DS forward scores. We conclude that music training may benefit the central executive system of WM, as reflected by the DS backward task. (shrink)
Eagerness and Optimistically Biased Metaperception: The More Eager to Learn Others’ Evaluations, the Higher the Estimation of Others’ Evaluations.Jingyi Lu,Hebing Duan &Xiaofei Xie -2018 -Frontiers in Psychology 9:345357.detailsPeople frequently judge how they are viewed by others during social interactions. These judgments are called metaperceptions. This study investigates the relationship between eagerness to determine the evaluation of others and metaperceptions. We propose that eagerness, which reflects approach motivation, induces positive emotions. We apply feelings-as-information theory and hypothesize that positive emotions cause optimistic self-evaluations and metaperceptions. Participants in three studies interact with judges during a singing contest (Study 1), a speech (Study 2), and an interview (Study 3). Results corroborate (...) that eagerness to learn the evaluation of others is overall related to optimistically biased metaperceptions. This effect is mediated sequentially by positive emotions, optimistic self-evaluations, and increased metaperceptions. (shrink)
Invulnerability Analysis and Optimization Strategy of Sector Network Using Cascading Failure Model.Haijun Liang,Jingyu Lu &Nan Chen -2022 -Complexity 2022:1-12.detailsResolving the challenge of flight delays caused by air traffic congestion renders it necessary to explore the mode of congestion propagation. By applying complex network theory, this article establishes a complex network structure where airspace sectors act as nodes, and the edges represent traffic flow relationships between sectors. In addition, a cascading failure model is proposed to analyze the airspace sector network’s invulnerability. The critical threshold and the sector abnormality rate are determined according to the cascading failure measurement indexes. Based (...) on the remaining capacity of sector nodes, two optimization strategies are proposed: adjacent load redistribution strategy and local load redistribution strategy. The simulation results demonstrate that the local load redistribution strategy greatly improves the airspace sector network’s invulnerability to cascading failure. (shrink)
How to minimize adverse effects of physical workplace violence on health sector workers: A preliminary study.Jingjing Lu,Jingjing Cai,Wenchen Shao &Zhaocheng Wang -2022 -Frontiers in Psychology 13.detailsPurposeThis paper is an exploratory study to investigate possible remedial measures accounting for a relatively favorable prognosis of health sector workers who have experienced physical WPV in Zhejiang province, China.MethodsFollowing a proportionate stratified sampling strategy, five tertiary hospitals, eight secondary hospitals, and thirty-two primary care facilities were conveniently selected. Among 4,862 valid respondents out of 6,089 self-conducted questionnaires, 224 health sector workers who have been directly exposed to physical WPV in the past year were included in the present study.ResultsThe present (...) study has three major findings: Victims’ satisfaction with the resolution of the physical WPV conflict was directly associated with the favorable prognosis. Taking days off from work after the violence can promote victims’ satisfaction with the resolution of the physical WPV conflict. Knowing that relevant departments investigated the case can promote victims’ satisfaction with the resolution of the physical WPV conflict.ConclusionWe propose a combined gesture of “offering adequate days off work after physical WPV” and “every physical violence must be investigated” that should be taken by all medical institutions in China. Health sector workers who get involved in physical WPV incidents should prioritize their safety and avoid any behavior that may intensify the conflicts. (shrink)
Why a Simple Second-Price Auction Induces Efficient Endogenous Entry.Jingfeng Lu -2009 -Theory and Decision 66 (2):181-198.detailsThis article further studies ex ante efficient auctions in the setting of Stegeman (1996 Participation costs and efficient auctions, Journal of Economic Theory 71, 228–259.), where there exist entry costs for bidders who know their valuations. An alternative method is established to address efficient auctions. This method illustrates the intuition why the ex ante efficient allocation is Bayesian implementable through the Stegeman (1996) auction (a second-price auction with a reserve price equal to seller’s valuation and no entry fee). More importantly, (...) our method leads to an alternative ex ante efficient auction that implements uniquely the efficient entry. Thus, this alternative auction solves the entry indeterminacy problem of the Stegeman (1996) auction, which generally induces inefficient entry equilibria besides the efficient ones. (shrink)
Enhancement of Event-Related Desynchronization in Motor Imagery Based on Transcranial Electrical Stimulation.Jiaxin Xie,Maoqin Peng,Jingqing Lu,Chao Xiao,Xin Zong,Manqing Wang,Dongrui Gao,Yun Qin &Tiejun Liu -2021 -Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 15.detailsDue to the individual differences controlling brain-computer interfaces, the applicability and accuracy of BCIs based on motor imagery are limited. To improve the performance of BCIs, this article examined the effect of transcranial electrical stimulation on brain activity during MI. This article designed an experimental paradigm that combines tES and MI and examined the effects of tES based on the measurements of electroencephalogram features in MI processing, including the power spectral density and dynamic event-related desynchronization. Finally, we investigated the effect (...) of tES on the accuracy of MI classification using linear discriminant analysis. The results showed that the ERD of the μ and β rhythms in the left-hand MI task was enhanced after electrical stimulation with a significant effect in the tDCS group. The average classification accuracy of the transcranial alternating current stimulation group and transcranial direct current stimulation group were improved significantly compared to the pre-and pseudo stimulation groups. These findings indicated that tES can improve the performance and applicability of BCI and that tDCS was a potential approach in regulating brain activity and enhancing valid features during noninvasive MI-BCI processing. Information transmission in action video gaming experts: Inferences from the lateralized readiness potential.Jiaxin Xie,Ruifang Cui,Weiyi Ma,Jingqing Lu,Lin Wang,Shaofei Ying,Dezhong Yao,Diankun Gong,Guojian Yan &Tiejun Liu -2022 -Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.detailsResearch showed that action real-time strategy gaming experience is related to cognitive and neural plasticity, including visual selective attention and working memory, executive control, and information processing. This study explored the relationship between ARSG experience and information transmission in the auditory channel. Using an auditory, two-choice, go/no-go task and lateralized readiness potential as the index to partial information transmission, this study examined information transmission patterns in ARSG experts and amateurs. Results showed that experts had a higher accuracy rate than amateurs. (...) More importantly, experts had a smaller stimulus-locked LRP component than amateurs on no-go trials, while the response-locked LRP component on go trials did not differ between groups. Thus, whereas amateurs used an asynchronous information transmission pattern, experts used a reduced asynchronous information transmission pattern or a synchronous pattern where most of processing occurred prior to response execution – an information transmission pattern that supports rapid, error-free performance. Thus, experts and amateurs may use different information transmission patterns in auditory processing. In addition, the information transmission pattern used by experts is typically observed only after long-term auditory training according to past research. This study supports the relationship between ARSG experience and the development of information processing patterns. (shrink)
Bayesian Analysis of Aberrant Response and Response Time Data.Zhaoyuan Zhang,Jiwei Zhang &Jing Lu -2022 -Frontiers in Psychology 13:841372.detailsIn this article, a highly effective Bayesian sampling algorithm based on auxiliary variables is proposed to analyze aberrant response and response time data. The new algorithm not only avoids the calculation of multidimensional integrals by the marginal maximum likelihood method but also overcomes the dependence of the traditional Metropolis–Hastings algorithm on the tuning parameter in terms of acceptance probability. A simulation study shows that the new algorithm is accurate for parameter estimation under simulation conditions with different numbers of examinees, items, (...) and speededness levels. Based on the sampling results, the powers of the two proposed Bayesian assessment criteria are tested in the simulation study. Finally, a detailed analysis of a high-state and large-scale computerized adaptive test dataset is carried out to illustrate the proposed methodology. (shrink)
