The rapid development of machine-learning algorithms, which underpin contemporary artificial intelligence systems, has created new opportunities for the automation of work processes and management functions. While algorithmic management has been observed primarily within the platform-mediated gig economy, its transformative reach and consequences are also spreading to more standard work settings. Exploring algorithmic management as a sociotechnical concept, which reflects both technological infrastructures and organizational choices, we discuss how algorithmic management may influence existing power and social structures within organizations. We identify (...) three key issues. First, we explore how algorithmic management shapes pre-existing power dynamics between workers and managers. Second, we discuss how algorithmic management demands new roles and competencies while also fostering oppositional attitudes toward algorithms. Third, we explain how algorithmic management impacts knowledge and information exchange within an organization, unpacking the concept of opacity on both a technical and organizational level. We conclude by situating this piece in broader discussions on the future of work, accountability, and identifying future research steps. (shrink)

My purpose is to offer an assessment of the scientific legacy of Converse's “Belief Systems” by reviewing five productive lines of research stimulated by his authoritative analysis and unsettling conclusions. First I recount the later life history of Converse's notion of “nonattitudes,” and suggest that as important as nonattitudes are, we should be paying at least as much attention to their opposite: attitudes held with conviction. Second, I argue that the problem of insufficient information that resides at the center of (...) Converse's analysis has not gone away, and that newly fashioned models of information processing offer only partial remedies. Third, I suggest that the concept of the “average voter” is a malicious fiction, as it blinds us to the enormous variation in political attention, interest, and knowledge that characterizes mass publics, in Converse's time as in our own. Fourth, I develop an affirmative aspect of Converse's analysis that has mostly been overlooked: namely, that if ideological reasoning is beyond most citizens’ capacity and interest, they might fall back on a simple and reasonable alternative, which I will call “group‐centrism.” And fifth, I consider the possibility that while the majority of individual citizens falls short of democratic standards, the public as a whole might do rather well. Los responsables de la investigación y las políticas de educación matemática lamentan las diferencias en los resultados relacionados con la raza y la clase, y tratan los llamados "fracasos" como obstáculos que deben eliminarse, en lugar de los resultados para los que está diseñado. Es decir, la educación matemática cumple una importante función económica en la sociedad: la selección social y la estratificación económica. Siguiendo la literatura que destaca la dimensión económica de las escuelas, este análisis ofrece un examen de (...) cómo se crean y refuerzan las desigualdades a través de una taxonomía de oportunidades matemáticas. Más específicamente, aborda dos interrogantes: 1) ¿Cuáles son las oportunidades que contribuyen a la creación y fortalecimiento de la desigualdad social en la escolarización rural? y 2) ¿De qué manera se acumulan o aprovechan esas oportunidades para lograr la estratificación? A través de una etnografía de una escuela primaria pública rural en los Estados Unidos, surgieron cinco oportunidades: aprendizaje, acreditación, posicionamiento, relación y trabajo en red. El artículo ofrece una conceptualización de cada uno de los tipos basados en la literatura de educación matemática y describe cómo se distribuyeron esas oportunidades. Sugiero que el enfoque de la educación matemática en las oportunidades de aprendizaje, si bien es importante, no tiene en cuenta otras dimensiones de la equidad en las escuelas. Estas otras oportunidades, a menudo invisibles, y los mecanismos por los cuales se distribuyen son probablemente una fuente de inequidad significativa. (shrink)

Page argues that localist models can be applied to a number of problems that are difficult for distributed models. However, it is easy to find examples where the opposite is true. This commentary illustrates the superiority of distributed models in the domain of artificial grammar learning, a paradigm widely used to investigate implicit learning.

Ubiquitous computing is a new kind of computing where devices enhance everyday artefacts and open up previously inaccessible situations for data capture. ‘Technology paternalism’ has been suggested by Spiekermann and Pallas (Poiesis & Praxis: Int J Technol Assess Ethics Sci 4(1):6–18, 2006) as a concept to gauge the social and ethical impact of these new technologies. In this article we explore this concept in the specific setting of UK road maintenance and construction. Drawing on examples from our qualitative fieldwork we (...) suggest that cultural logics such as those reflected in paternalistic health and safety discourse are central in legitimising the introduction of ubiquitous computing technologies. As such, there is little doubt that paternalism plays an essential role in people’s reasoning about ubiquitous computing in this setting. We argue, however, that since discourses such as health and safety are used by everyone (including both managers and workers) in the organisation to further their own aims, technologies transcend purely paternalistic conceptualisations and instead become a focal point for ongoing struggles for control between those deploying and using them. This means that the benefits and costs of such new technologies become harder to define from an ethical and social perspective. (shrink)

ABSTRACTIn this article we investigate structural differences between “literary” metaphors created by renowned poets and “nonliterary” ones imagined by non-professional authors from Katz et al.’s 1988 corpus. We provide data from quantitative narrative analyses of the altogether 464 metaphors on over 70 variables, including surface features like metaphor length, phonological features like sonority score, or syntactic-semantic features like sentence similarity. In a first computational study using machine learning tools we show that Katz et al.’s literary metaphors can be successfully discriminated (...) from their nonliterary ones on the basis of response measures, in particular the ratings for familiarity, ease of interpretation, semantic relatedness, and comprehensibility. Two main goals of the emerging field of neurocognitive poetics are the use of more natural and ecologically valid stimuli, tasks and contexts and providing methods and models allowing to quantify distinctive features of verbal materials used in such tasks and contexts and their effects on readers responses. A natural key element of poetic language, metaphor, still is understudied insofar as relatively little empirical research looked at literary or poetic metaphors. An exception is Katz et al.’s corpus of 204 literary (...) metaphors by authors such as Shakespeare or Dylan Thomas, for which various rating data are available. We reanalyzed their corpus using a combination of quantitative narrative analysis, latent semantic analysis, and machine learning in order to identify relevant features of the metaphors that influenced the ratings. The combined application of computational tools sheds light on surface and affective-semantic features that co-determine the reception of poetic metaphors and successfully predicted the period of origin, authorship and goodness ratings of the metaphors. The present results can be used for generating quantitative hypotheses or selecting and matching verbal stimuli in empirical studies of literature and neurocognitive poetics. (shrink)

Sharing social media research datasets allows for reproducibility and peer-review, but it is very often difficult or even impossible to achieve due to legal restrictions and can also be ethically questionable. What is more, research data repositories and other research infrastructure and research support institutions are only starting to target social media researchers. In this paper, we present a practical solution to sharing social media data with the help of a social science data archive. Our aim is to contribute to (...) the effort of enhancing comparability and reproducibility in social media research by taking some first steps towards setting standards for sustainable data archiving. We present a showcase for sharing social media data with the example of a big dataset containing geotagged tweets through a research data archive. We provide a general background to the process of long-term archiving of research data. After some consideration of the current obstacles for sharing and archiving social media data, we present our solution of archiving the specific dataset of geotagged tweets at the GESIS Data Archive for the Social Sciences, a publicly funded German data archive for secure and long-term archiving of social science data. We archived and documented tweet IDs and additional information to improve reproducibility of the initial research while also attending to ethical and legal considerations, and taking into account Twitter’s terms of service in particular. In many animal species, the early development of the embryo follows a stereotypic pattern of cell cleavage, lineage allocation and generation of tissue asymmetry leading to delineation of the body plan with three primary embryonic axes. The mammalian embryo has been regarded as an exception and primary body axes of the mouse embryo were thought to develop after implantation. However, recent findings have challenged this view. Asymmetry in the fertilised oocyte, as defined by the position of the second polar body (...) and the sperm entry point, can be correlated with the orientation of the animal–vegetal and the embryonic–abembryonic axes in the preimplantation blastocyst. Studies of the pattern of morphogenetic movement of cells and genetic activity in the peri‐implantation embryo suggest that the animal–vegetal axis of the blastocyst might presage the orientation of the anterior–posterior axis of the gastrula. This suggests that the asymmetry of the zygote that is established at fertilisation and early cleavage has a lasting impact on the delineation of body axes during embryogenesis. In Demokratien gibt es gewöhnlich ein gesetzliches Mindestalter, durch dasKinder und Jugendliche von politischen Wahlen ausgeschlossen werden. Je nach Altersstruktur der Bevölkerung dürfen ungefähr 20 bis 25 Prozent der Staatsbürger eines Landes nicht wählen. In diesem Aufsatz werden der Ausschluss Minderjähriger von Wahlen in Demokratien sowie mögliche alternative Stellungen Minderjähriger im Wahlrecht einer ethischen Analyse unterzogen. Die erste zentrale These des Aufsatzes lautet, dass der Ausschluss und die Nichtrepräsentation von Minderjährigen ungerecht ist, dass die Regierungsgewalt über Minderjährige in (...) demokratischen Staaten nicht ausreichend legitimiert ist und dassKinder und Jugendliche gute Gründe dafür haben, sich gegen Gesetze und Maßnahmen ihrer Regierung mit Akten des zivilen Ungehorsams zu wehren. Die zweite zentrale These des Aufsatzes lautet, dass der beste Weg zur Aufhebung dieses Zustands der Ungerechtigkeit und mangelnden Legitimation in der Einführung einer Pflicht der Eltern besteht, stellvertretend für ihreKinder zu wählen. Diese elterliche Pflicht sollte durch ein Vetorecht der Minderjährigen ab 14 Jahren ergänzt werden. (shrink)

Die technisierte »Urszene« im Rahmen medizinisch assistierter Reproduktion verlangt allen Familienmitgliedern herausfordernde psychische Integrationsleistungen ab. Seitens der Eltern ist eine bewusste Auseinandersetzung mit den Belastungen durch Infertilitätsdiagnose und Kinderwunschbehandlung sowie mit den Erwartungen in Bezug auf das Kind notwendig; sie ermöglicht ihnen einen offenen Umgang mit den Besonderheiten der Entstehung ihres Kindes. FürKinder besteht die Herausforderung in der realen und phantasmatischen Auseinandersetzung mit allen an ihrer Entstehung Beteiligten. Durch die Verwendung von »Fremdgameten« oder die Auslagerung der Schwangerschaft in (...) eine »Tragemutter« bekommt der »Familienroman« eine reale Grundlage. Sie erfordert eine Anerkennung multipler Elternschaft. Anonyme Gametenspenden stellen Leerstellen in der Biographie dar und erschweren die Identitätsfindung. Psychoanalytisches Verstehen, Beraten und Forschen kann, wie die Autorin zeigen möchte, die notwendigen Integrationsprozesse in Zeiten einer rapiden Entwicklung im Bereich der Reproduktionsmedizin unterstützen. In unserem Beitrag möchten wir zunächst auf die kategoriale Einordnung des philosophischen Begriffs “Respekt” eingehen und danach zeigen, wieKinder in der philosophischen Community of Inquiry mit Problemen umgehen, die mit dem Begriffsfeld „Respekt“ verbunden sind. Aus dem breiten Angebot der dabei entwickelten Kategorie möchten wir auf der einen Seite die Kategorie „eine epistemische und moralische Tugend“ herausgreifen und auf der anderen Seite die Kategorie „ein Gefühl“ und zeigen, dass der philosophische Begriff “Respekt” als „Respekt vor jemand oder etwas“, (...) sich in seinem Anforderungsprofil mit der Nähe zum Gegenstand wandelt. Dadurch ergeben sich folgende Fragen: Müssen Personen immer respektiert werden? Kannst du jeden respektieren? Wer verdient Respekt? Kann man sich Respekt verdienen? Welche Handlungen sollten nicht respektiert werden? Kann man Respekt verlieren? Kann man Respekt kaufen? Gibt es falschen Respekt? Hierzu analysieren wir die Kinderdialoge eines philosophischen Gesprächs mit 6 -14 jährigen Kindern sowie ihre Kinderzeichnungen. In unserem Beitrag deuten wir Kinderzeichnungen und Kinderdialoge aus dem von der DAAD geförderten Forschungsprojekt „Kinder philosophieren über das Konstrukt ‚Respekt’“. I want to present a new interpretation of Hobbes, in particular of what he was up to when he wrote Leviathan. In order to do this I will examine how he viewed the problem of social disorder and how he intended for that problem to be solved. I will argue that although he held that maintaining a credible threat of punishment for wrongdoing is necessary for social order, to Hobbes it is not sufficient; unless the subjects are properly educated the (...) commonwealth is doomed. I maintain that this need to ensure proper education illuminates Leviathan’s intent and its structure. Further, I’ll argue that when education is given its proper place in Hobbes’ scheme, the result is an account of disorder and a solution to it which are truer to Hobbes’ text and more plausible than those of certain competing views. In what follows, I will give an overview of the line I propose to take, then discuss how it contrasts with other views of Hobbes in the literature. The problem of disorder. A great deal of Hobbes scholarship focuses on the account he gives in the first half of Leviathan of how people in a state of nature could create a commonwealth. Fruitful and important as it is, however, this focus tends to leave the second half of the book a mystery: if what’s important about Leviathan is its presentation of a social contract theory, it’s not obvious why Hobbes devotes half of his treatise to theological matters. I will argue that once we have a clearer understanding of the problem Hobbes was addressing, Leviathan’s second half can be seen as an important component of Hobbes’ intended solution. While modern theoreticians are often most interested in Hobbes’ account of how people prior to society could make one from scratch, Hobbes himself was most concerned with how to prevent disorder from destroying an existing government. Hobbes wrote a good deal about the causes of disorder—whole chapters and many 1 scattered remarks in The Elements of Law, De Cive, and Leviathan, plus much of Behemoth—and I propose examining these writings closely in order to clarify how Hobbes conceived the problem he was addressing.. In der Medizin gehörenKinder neben Ausländern, Behinderten und psychiatrisch Erkrankten zu den besonders vulnerablen Patientengruppen. Im Folgenden soll die Frage nach der Würde derKinder in medizinethischer Hinsicht behandelt werden. Dazu werden drei Thesen erläutert und begründet: (1.) das Prinzip der Menschenwürde kann nicht ganz außer Acht gelassen werden, wennKinder als Patienten in medizinethischer Hinsicht thematisiert werden; (2.) das Prinzip der Menschenwürde wird in der Medizinethik nicht schon vollständig durch die medizinethischen Prinzipien der Patientenautonomie und (...) der Fürsorge für die Patienten abgedeckt; (3.) die habituelle und bewusste Achtung der Würde des Menschen bringt immer wieder neue und bisher noch wenig beachtete Aspekte des medizinischen, therapeutischen und pflegerischen Umgangs mit Patienten und Kindern als Patienten ans Licht. Diskussionen über den Gehalt des Prinzips der Menschenwürde gehen nicht nur in der Medizinethik, sondern auch in anderen Bereichen der angewandten Ethik in der Regel von Erwachsenen aus. Erwachsene gelten als die paradigmatischen Subjekte und Objekte der Wahrnehmung, Zuschreibung und Anerkennung von Würde. Meistens denkt man nur an Erwachsene, wenn man darauf besteht, dass die menschliche Würde (1.) vom moralischen und rechtlichen Standpunkt aus grundsätzlich zu achten ist, (2.) unter bestimmten psychologischen, sozialen und politischen Umständen gefährdet ist und (3.) in bestimmten Handlungssituationen mit anderen ethischen Forderungen in Konflikt geraten kann. Bei Erwachsenen ist es relativ leicht, ethische Intuitionen darüber, ob in bestimmten medizinischen Handlungssituationen die Würde eines Menschen verletzt wird, zu formulieren und zu begründen. Denn bei Erwachsenen steht die Würdeverletzung in einem engen Zusammenhang mit der Berücksichtigung verschiedener ethischer Forderungen: (1.) nach Achtung der willentlichen Selbstbestimmung und der normativen Autonomie, (2.) nach Berücksichtigung von persönlichen Lebenszielen und Wertpräferenzen, (3.) nach Bewahrung von mutmaßlichen Lebenschancen (4.) nach Berücksichtigung personaler Bedürfnisse nach Anerkennung, Gegenseitigkeit, Intimität, Integrität, etc. sowie (5.) nach Wahrnehmung und Anerkennung der unverwechselbaren Individualität des Anderen. Die Angemessenheit und Erfüllbarkeit dieser ethischen Forderungen hängt nun aber von soziologischen und psychologischen Gegebenheiten ab, die bei Kindern je nach Altersgruppe und individueller Ausprägung nicht in gleicher Weise gegeben sind. Deswegen soll hier gezeigt werden, welche besondere und zusätzliche Rolle eine medizinethische Erinnerung an die Würde derKinder im Spannungsfeld zwischen Autonomie und Fürsorge spielen kann. Dabei zeigt sich, dass es gerade die Achtung vor der Würde des Kindes ist, die uns überhaupt erst ermöglicht, das Kind als Kind und damit als ein eigenständiges Subjekt und als ein besonderes menschliches Wesen zu entdecken. Zusammenfassung Ausgehend von der Annahme, dass die deutsche Gesellschaft als eine geschichtete Gesellschaft beschrieben werden kann, verfolgt der vorliegende Beitrag das Ziel, den aktuellen Forschungsstand zu schichtspezifischen Einfärbungen der Sportengagements von Kindern und Jugendlichen in Deutschland zu beschreiben und zu reflektieren. Dabei zeigt sich, dass in einem Teil der vorliegenden Publikationen auf die Darlegung theoretischer Annahmen verzichtet wird und dass die gewählten Methoden zur Datenerfassung und -auswertung wie auch die Komplexität der Interpretationsansätze als heterogen einzuschätzen sind. Die vorliegenden empirischen Befunde (...) deuten darauf hin, dass Schichtmerkmale zentrale, auch indirekt wirkende Parameter für die Sportengagements von Heranwachsenden sind, dass die Stärke dieser Zusammenhänge jedoch mit der Form des Sportengagements variiert. Drei schmale Bücher aus den nicht so goldenen Jahren 1924-30. Kant fürKinder wurde damals begrüßt, der Faksimile-Nachdruck von 2004 ließ den griffigen Titel zum Schlagwort werden. In einfachen Fragen und Antworten, ohne Fremdwörter, bietet das Buch eine gründliche Einführung in Kants Ethik, Religionsphilosophie und Erkenntnistheorie. Der Katechismus, 1978 faksimiliert, will, ebenfalls in Dialogform und vom Standpunkt Kants, auch diejenigen zur Vernunft bringen, die mit übersinnlichen Kräften und okkulten Praktiken umzugehen glauben. Der Mahnruf gibt die erste kenntnisreiche Darstellung von (...) Leben und Werk des Kantianers Ernst Marcus (1856-1928), zugleich eine unvermindert aktuelle Diagnose der Orientierungsprobleme unserer modernen Existenz. ZusammenfassungWie ist die Auswahl zukünftigerKinder in moralischer Hinsicht zu beurteilen? Der Beitrag untersucht diese Frage auf der Basis eines liberalen Prinzips der reproduktiven Freiheit, welches Handlungsspielräume und Privatsphäre in Fragen der Fortpflanzung verteidigt, wenn nicht gewichtige moralische Gründe aufgezeigt werden können, welche den Handlungen der beteiligten Personen Grenzen setzen. Er beschränkt sich auf die negative Auswahl, d. h. die Auswahl von gesunden Kindern anstelle von zukünftigen Kindern mit Behinderung oder gesundheitlicher Beeinträchtigung. Erörtert werden selektionsbefürwortende Überlegungen, welche das Wohlergehen (...) des zukünftigen Kindes in den Fokus rücken, und zwei grundsätzlich selektionskritische Argumente. Das erste verweist auf parentale Tugenden, welche mit der Auswahl zukünftigerKinder unvereinbar wären. Bei dem zweiten handelt es sich um den Einwand der Diskriminierung von Menschen mit Behinderung. Das Ergebnis der Diskussion ist, dass es zukünftigen Eltern in den meisten Fällen freisteht, die Entscheidung über die Auswahl ihrerKinder im Licht ihrer Ziele und Werte zu treffen. (shrink)

This article reviews empirical research of corporate social performance usingKinder, Lydenberg, Domini social ratings data through 2011. The review synthesizes 100 empirical studies, noting consistencies and inconsistencies among studies examining similar constructs. Notable consistencies were that, although accounting measures of financial performance were a positive outcome of CSP, the same was not often true of stock returns. Also, demographics of top management teams increased CSP strengths, but did not reduce concerns, whereas organizational decentralization reduced CSP concerns. Notable inconsistencies (...) were that CEO demographics were not as often related to CSP as were TMT demographics, indicating that managerial discretion may be an important mitigating factor shaping managerial effects on CSP. Also, although CSP for some organizations seemed influenced by institutional pressures, other organizations appeared to be less influenced, perhaps suggesting that some organizations are more able than others to resist institutional pressures. Future research should attempt to probe observed consistencies and inconsistencies, and to test the boundaries of observed relationships, toward a disciplined program of middle-range theory development. Die künstliche Zeugung und Selektion von Nachwuchs als Spender von Gewebe für Dritte ist ethisch umstritten. Kritiker des Verfahrens berufen sich oft auf Kants Forderung, Personen seien jederzeit auch als Zwecke an sich selbst zu behandeln. Diese Kritik wird aber oft vorgebracht, ohne dass erläutert würde, was es heißt, Personen als Zwecke an sich selbst zu behandeln. Befürworter des Verfahrens weisen die Kritik daher als dunkel zurück oder deuten sie so, dass sie das Verfahren zulässt. Dieser Artikel erläutert den Kern (...) der Zweckformel (im Zusammenhang mit anderen Formulierungen des kategorischen Imperativs). Following the liberation of Poland 1945, the childrens organization of the Jewish-Socialdemocratic "Bund" SKIF formed itself anew and remained in existence until the communists' ban of social democratic organizations. Starting with the first post-war conference of the International of social democratic children and youth education in October 1945 until the mid-sixties the SKIF played a recognizable role within these international structures of the "Falcons" movement. In the late forties the SKIF simultaneously existed in Paris, where a successor organization is still (...) active, and in Brussels. During the seventies and eighties a "SKIF-ist" holiday colony existed in New York and from 1950 until this day further groups exist in Melbourne. Since 1945 the SKIF has existed primarily as an organization of survivors and their children. Later it managed to develop a new function and to offer an educational model for the following generations of Jewish children, which lies beyond religion and Zionism. (shrink)

Carroll (1991) encouraged researchers in Social Issues Management (SIM) to continue to measure Corporate Social Performance (CSP) from a variety of different perspectives utilizing a variety of different measures. In addition, Wolfe and Aupperle (1991) (and others) have asserted that there is no, single best way to measure CSP and that multiple measures and perspectives help develop the field. However, Pfeffer (1993) suggest that a lack of consistent measurement has constrained organization studies (and by implication, the field of social issues (...) management,) in its development as a field. It may be in the best interest of social issues management researchers to try to development a common body of measures and data. Recently,Kinder, Lydenberg and Domini & Co. (KLD — a social choice investment advisory firm) has made available their social performance database. The KLD data have potential to become a widely accepted set of CSP measures. The purpose of this paper is to present a construct validity study comparing the KLD data to other measures of CSP. (shrink)

The particular situation of children in hospitals is discussed on the basis of a principle of equality which is founded on both childrens' rights and theology. It is just because of these equal rights of children that special medical care is required which does justice to the characteristics and the stage of development of children. Medical care like that does not at all have tobe a general obstacle to considerations of economic efficiency. The particular dependence of children on stable social (...) surroundings implies a priority of outpatient and home treatment as weil as the integration of parents and other important persans to whom the child relates closely when it comes to an inevitable admission in a hospital. A model of medical ethics based on »informed consent« needs particular aspects concerning the interests of children in hospitalssuch as child-orientated information and the graduated legal obligatory nature of the child 's will. In diesem Beitrag möchte ich Argumente für zwei Thesen vorbringen. Erstens möchte ich darlegen, dass der Ausschluss vom Wahlrecht durch eine Altersgrenze rechtfertigungsbedürftig ist. Zweitens werde ich argumentieren, dass es keine hinreichende Rechtfertigung für diesen Ausschluss gibt. Wenn beide Behauptungen richtig sind, dann folgt, dass wir die Altersgrenze beim Wahlrecht abschaffen sollten. Meiner Auffassung nach reicht es also nicht, dass wir das Wahlalter von 18 auf ein geringeres Alter wie 16 oder 14 herabsetzen, wie häufig gefordert wird. Vielmehr sollte jeder (...) Mensch unabhängig von seinem Alter die Möglichkeit bekommen, sich selbstständig als Erstwähler zu registrieren und dann auch wählen zu gehen. (shrink)
