Pearl Harbor starKate Beckinsale, 29, and actor Michael Sheen (The Four Feathers), 34, have separated after nine years together. The British couple, who never wed, have a 4-year-old daughter, Lily. A rep for the actress did not give a reason for the split but says that the breakup occurred in January, shortly after they moved from London to L.A.

Late Show host David Letterman, 55, is recovering from shingles, a painful skin rash caused by a viral infection. Letterman’s doctor said, “Dave is on his way to a full recovery.” No date has been given for the comedian’s return to his CBS show…
Guitarist Gary Rossington, 51, a founding member of the southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, whose hits include 1974’s “Free Bird,” underwent quintuple heart bypass surgery on Feb. 25 in Atlanta. The rocker is expected to make a full recovery in two to three months….
Actress Bridget Fonda, 39, was treated for a fracture of two vertebrae in her back at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica on Feb. 27, after the Jaguar she was driving flipped over on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Police say wet road conditions caused the accident. Fonda was traveling alone.
Sued
On Feb. 27 in L.A., hip-hop artist Johnny Gallo, 25, sued actor Mark Wahlberg (Planet of the Apes), 31, for allegedly taking $80,000 worth of clothes from an L. A. apartment where the two were temporarily living last February. Gallo, who says he lost work because he didn’t have the right clothes for his performances, is seeking more than $300,000 in damages. A rep for Wahlberg did not comment.
Deaths
Singer-songwriter Hank Ballard, 75, who originally recorded 1958’s “The Twist,” died of throat cancer on March 2 at his Los Angeles home. Chubby Checker created an international dance craze after covering the song in 1959.
