D74A Perodua Axia wins Malaysia Good Design Award

TheD74A Perodua Axia has won the Malaysia Good Design Award for Public Areas and Transportation Products, recognising the national carmaker’s most compact hatchback for its design.

Launched in February 2023, the second-generation Axia replaced its predecessor which in turn replaced theViva, in a lineage that traces back to theKancil, and the current model builds upon the sales success that is thefirst-generation Axia that had 582,728 units sold.

This is the third model from Perodua to be based on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform following theAtiva and theAlza, and measures 115 mm longer and 45 mm wider than its predecessor, while its wheelbase of 2,525 mm is 70 mm longer than before.

Powering the second-generation Axia is a 1KR-VE 1.0 litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine paired with a Dual-Mode CVT, essentially a unit that combines belt drive with a gear drive for improved fuel efficiency, acceleration and quietness.

For safety kit, the top AV variant gets lane departure warning/prevention, blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert in addition to ASA 3.0, which consists of autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and front vehicle departure warning, along with six airbags.

The second-generation Perodua Axia is priced from RM38,600 for the Axia 1.0L G, RM40,000 for the 1.0L X, RM44,000 for the 1.0L SE and RM49,500 for the 1.0L AV. The entry-point2023 Axia 1.0L E is an updated first-generation model with manual transmission, priced at RM22,000; all prices are on-the-road without insurance.

      Pay money get good design award. Just like they pay money to MIROS to get 5stars rating, and JPJ to declare their cars are absolutely not affected by Toyota & Daihatsu safety test scandal.

    The Axia and Aruz,sales have been pretty sluggish.
    A P2 salesman offered lots of freebees and immediate stock,whereas the Bezza and Alza require waiting 60 to 150 days.
    P2 fanboys wont mind extending the hp by a year to get Myvi or Bezza,bigger size ,more power ,also equally fuel efficient.
    The Aruz is bogged down by super bouncy suspension like the old Avanza models.

    • Ofc the aruz is bouncy. It is based on super old ladder frame chasis. The one who bought one without doing further research then complaint are just downright stupid not actually the car fault

      • the comfort in Suzuki Jimny is worse than this.
        Aruz is more comfortable than my car of it’s Jip Class. Aruz has it’s strength yet reaching it’s price point.

        you can mod the comfort, power easily from here.
        as long as you willing to spend. 1 direct way is using Adaptive Suspension.

    • Considering previous one was LED, it’s a downgrade. Older Axia had a nicer overall design in my opinion.

      • because the older axia was a daihatsu rebadge where daihatsu helmed the design. this one was a perodua design hence the flop.

        It’s called projector headlamps for previous one. Current one also LED but not projector. Pls ensure accuracy of your comment before commenting.

  • Don’t what good design they talking about. Pintu dia macam pintu peti sejuk. Dah buka, dia tutup balik sendiri. This is a serious safety issue.

      • it is not premium compared to Mini Cooper,
        but it is no less premium compared to older hatchback like
        Mitsubishi Mirage 1.2L, Suzuki Alto Swift 1.4L,
        Hyundai Getz, Yaris 2009 etc.

        at this price, these are the choice.
        new premium or used plastic

          compare lah apple to apple, at least compare la same generation apple 2024 vs orange 2024.

          i owned Mirage from 10 years ago and it was far better than viva 10 years ago.

          even though now i’m driving mazda 3 i didnt compare it with civic from 10 years ago.

  • I feel like the reason why Toyota/Daihatsu/Perodua wanted to manufacture the Axia/Ayga/Ayla its because they wanted to make it as a modern Yugo GV and a modern Austin Maestro, two of the most bland, underpowered and unsafe cars in the history of humankind. And they just wanted to cheat us customers with their inaccurate car crash safety test results.

    Ugh, another one of those syok sendiri awards.

    A refrigerator-shaped tinbox on wheels without rear window heater/defroster, using bulbs in the rear taillights instead of the LEDs on the previous gen Axia and still powered by a gutless engine that makes more noise than it makes power.

    This is called good design ah?
